Playoff Contender or Pretender

Created by: WCSF

Description
The cost of obtaining Reimer/Bonino/Demelo in trades may be more or less or different than I have identified. Also, the free agent costs may be off a bit. These are the veterans or types of veterans I would like to see the Sabres target though. If the Sabres upgrade in net, move Bryson/Fitzgerald to 4th pairing and Asplund to 13th forward it will represent a substantial improvement in depth. Lots of youth being asked to play important roles though, I recognize.

If Portillo will sign jets say yes. Even without him committing to signing this is still a good deal. Also a good deal for BUF as they get a really solid shutdown dman.

Asplund is too important to sit. I'd rather just not acquire Bonino so Rasmus can play. That's too steep of a price to pay for Demelo imo

I agree that Asplund is too good to sit. My thinking is just that Bonino is an upgrade over Eakin. How the lines shake-out is TBD as injuries happen. A healthy Asplund will play 70 plus games on multiple lines with multiple partners.

I think you are right on the cost for Demelo. Hard to know Portillo's value.

With Portillo not wanting to sign in Buffalo he doesn’t have much value. Jets ran into the same issue with Nathan Smith this past year and moved him to ARI in a cap dump deal. A 2nd seems fair for DeMelo. I guess it just comes down to if Portillo will sign in WPG or not.

The Jets definitely aren't moving DeMelo for a goalie that looks like he wants to go the UFA route. If he was willing to sign in Winnipeg a deal might be able to be worked out, but not likely for DeMelo.

He didn't say he would not sign with Buffalo. He just did not this offseason. Main reason is he wants to compete for an NCAA title and also wants the extra development year at the NCAA level

Isn’t he going to be a FA next summer if he doesn’t sign at the end of next year? Just looked, 2 years from that. Solid deal then for WPG, could probably remove Portillo.

Ya he still has a couple years. Id be surprised if he doesnt sign after the next season. Whether Johnson will sign or not is a different story, not sure whats happening there
