Stars absorbing 10M for two players coming off probably their worst season in career. Great take!

They might as well give the money you gave to klingberg who's better and younger than Petry while also not eating the terrible Armia contract.

Petry is gonna stick around unless we get a decent offer... this isn't it.

Petry has regain his confidence under MSL and had a strong finish. His family might be coming back to MTL... so he might ask to stay finally. KH only wished to respect the player's request to be with his family. No need to trade him at a lost especially as a RHD... which is a big weakness in term of prospect.

So game plan is… wait for Dallas to get swept and hope they hire a new GM with impaired judgement due to a drug addiction??? Bold strategy Cotton let’s see how it works out for them lol

3 years is long time commitment in the actuel cap context. Espicially since it's also coinciding with Robertson, Hintz and Oettinger getting huge raises in that same time span.

I always disagree with analysis like this Let's say Montreal "gives" Petry away to another team. That's 6.25m X 3 in additional cap that the Habs can use to sign a good UFA.

The same reason why Petry's trade value isn't high. Teams don't have to give up much to obtain Petry and if the Habs decline offers, teams just spend 6.25m on other players.
Teams are so cap strapped, they don't have to take trade futures of mid to high cap players.

We are rebuilding. No UFA is signing this summer.

I pretty sure Petry is going back to form next season if his family is back... if he goes back to being a 40pts+ Dman, 6.25M is not bad.

I would rather move Gallly, Drouin, Hoffman or Anderson before our only top 4 RHD. They are hard to come by... and expensive. Unless we can secure Letang for cheap... I don't see KH letting him go for nothing,

For Petry and the Habs sake , I hope Petry remains Habs and is happy about it. With the lessening of the Covid restrictions, maybe the family issues are solved.

But you mentioned four players, Gallagher, Drouin, Hoffman and Anderson. If their contracts are not deemed of good values by other teams, they probably can't be traded. If a cap strapped league, teams can find other options including UFAs who are looking for a payday and home.

However, in the last few years the FA market has become very expensive. And 8 years multi-million deals are somehow riskier due to the bidding wars. A player supposed to be worth 6.5M will get 7 to 8.5M on the FA market.

So I believe their is still a market for top 6 players around the 5-6M range with short-mid term on their contracts.
