What would you do if you are the Ottawa Senators

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2021-22 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: May 8, 2022
Published: May 8, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
OTT
  1. Fiala, Kevin
Additional Details:
The outcome of the draft lottery has no effect on Ottawa.

Ottawa is picking 7th overall.

This is who gets taken before it is Ottawa's turn to pick.

1. Montreal --- Shane Wright
2. Seattle --- Logan Cooley
3. Arizona --- Simon Nemec
4. Philadelphia --- Matthew Savoie
5. New Jersey --- Juraj Slafkovsky
6. Columbus --- David Jiricek

You're now on the clock and you have two options.

A. Keep the 7th overall pick and select the best player available.

B. Swap the 7th overall pick straight up for Kevin Fiala.

If you made the swap, you would sign Fiala to an extension of 8 million x 8.

The extension would contain no signing bonus money.

But the last 4 years of it would have a full-NMC.

What would you do?

If it’s 7th overall, I’m taking Kemell. If it’s 8th and Kemell is gone I’d trade it.

Also I’d rather trade Formenton + protected 2023 1st instead

As much as I like Fiala, I don't want to trade the 7th for him and I think he will want more than 8mil. Defense is a more glaring hole, always has been. I know Dorion wants to find a winger for Stuetzle but I'd rather tap into free agency for that. Trocheck would be my number one choice and they can split faceoffs one being left and right shot. Palat and Giroux being other options. I just don't believe in trading top 10 picks during the rebuild phase and they're simply not out of it yet. But Dorion has a history of doing moves I don't like so I wouldn't be shocked if it happened

Patience, keep drafting and building, just not sure fiala moves the line enough, if there’s a package of some sort and possibly a trade back for picks and prospects, I may change my opinion.

Yup if we have 8, I’m game for Lekkerimaki. Him or Kemell would be great

Trade withstanding, do you honestly believe the Sens ownership would spend 8x8 on Fiala?

Especially with some of the other contracts coming up. I don’t ever see this team spending anywhere close to the cap.

if they can sign Kuzmenko to elc and possibly try to get connor garland out of vancouver, Giroux would be good fit for ottawa but would he chance that if florida decides they want to resign him?

The drafting days are over. Our top line is set. Stutzle needs help on line 2. We have the bottom 6 and Sanderson has arrived on defence

You can still stay under 72 mill if you buyout White and give Arizona something to take Zaitsev. Even with an 8 x 8 for Fiala

i feel the sens are another year away from making the playoffs even with an extra top 6 winger. defense and goaltending is too iffy. but maybe the kids will grow quick and prove they are stars and im wrong.

Fair enough, just feel the need is greater than fiala, I wonder what the flames do if they lose in first round, can the sens take on two tkachuks?

If they get Fiala and keep their first line intact, give Stutzle an elite winger in Fiala (Stutzle is about to explode), rock an elite 3rd line of Formenton-Pinto-Brown and a 4th line energy grinding of Kelly-Kastelic-Watson, that offence is set.

Now , you got Chabot, Sanderson, Zub in your top 4.
Brannstrom, Holden, Thomson can rotate for the bottom 2 spots.
You just basically need another top 4RD. Maybe they go after Rutta and pair with Chabot, could work .

Forsberg has been one of the best goalies since Jan 1st. I don’t think he’s a flash in the pan.

By the comments of the NJD GM you dont even have the option to trade for Fiala in this situation as the wild picked at 5

In that case, Ottawa gets Joakim Kemell.

Certainly not saying it’s not possible and I do really like the fit but that day OTT buyouts player’s and signs Fiala to a big ticket, I will be very surprised

I just see the wars in front of the net, and believe ottawa maybe needs another heavy that is skilled enough for top 6, over the lighter skilled fiala. League is getting lighter and faster, but certain spots still need a little weight.

We have Tkachuk, Batherson, Pinto, Kastelic, Watson who are all big and physical. We are fine

I’m all for Fiala. But if they just draft at 7-8 BPA and just find a 2-3 year old contract either in free agency, Palat, Perron or Giroux (gives them the vet presence they need) or by trade guys like Nyquist, Eberle etc . That’s a very good option too. You can give them a ton of money to keep the term shorter

i know, a lot is gonna depend on how many rookies perform and if the goaltending is consistent, which can be hard to guess at this point.

I’m willing to bet Stutzle gets 70+ next year and Norris gets 40 goals. I can see all 4 of Tkachuk, Norris, Batherson, Stutzle going for at least 65-70pts each

That’s absolutely a must. They already have a dynamic top line. They need to address a vet that can give they some secondary scoring.

Or it’s going to be another long year.
