Crazy EK65 Trade Proposal

Created by: Waffelz
Team: 2022-23 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: May 9, 2022
Published: May 9, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
EK65 trade breakdown:

1. Lots of people have to agree to waive lots of NTCs for this to even be possible.
2. The Sharks are giving up a good player, in return for 1 okay player, 1 overpaid goalie, and 1 bad player.
3. The reason the Sharks may want to do this is to balance their cap expenditure between forwards and defensemen, and they get all of these deals off of their books 2 years before the EK65 deal expires.
4. The reason the Senators may want to do this is to get more competitive in the short term. They don't have any kind of cap complications right now, and if the Sharks pay EK65s signing bonus this summer they get him for only $2m in real dollars next year.

The other trades are minor moves to clear room for other players. The Sharks have a ton of depth in their bottom 6, and need to get more scoring. Adding a guy like Mason Marchment is good, and leaves cap space for extending Timo Meier. According to his player card, Zaitzev is an active detriment to his team by being on the ice, so the Sharks are going to pay him $4.5m for the next two years to either watch from the press box or go play in the AHL.

$6 mil to Marchment? Come on now, that’s ridiculous for one decent year. Prior to this year he was non existent.

Aside from the trades, that Marchment signing could potentially become the worst contract in NHL.

Man's been playing in the best 3rd line in the league and overproducing.

I lowered it down to $4.75, is that still too much?

I read your explanation.

And you say nothing about why EK65 would want to experience another trade between San Jose and Ottawa.

EK65 declines.

Try again.

Yes.

Based on one year I'd give him $3M max - otherwise not worth the risk of pulling the trigger.

I lowered it down to $3.5, over a 2 year term that's not much risk.

Doesn't his family still live in Ottawa? They're a team on the tail end of a rebuild with a lot of up and coming talent. Both could be reasons to go back.

Detroit isn't trading for depth players. Easy pass.

Detroit has the worst PK in the league, I thought they might want a PK specialist they can throw on the 4th line.

EK65 doesn't want to go to a rebuilding team.

EK65 wants to go to a team that currently has a credible shot at winning the Stanley Cup.

It's the reason why he signed that massive extension with San Jose in the first place.

The forwards were not the problem on the PK...

I think I read we need a new owner.

A new owner that would pay out the rest of EK65's contract if we were to trade for him.

Is the family taking over? I'm not a Sens fan btw, I actually don't know the full details on the previous owner other than he was not well liked.

The team is currently owned by Eugene Melnyk's estate with his two daughters serving as the executors.

Eventually, they will have to sell.

It's why taking on a massive contract like EK65's is out of the question.

Is it too much of a slam dunk deal? Would Ottawa need to send back a pick or retain a little bit of salary on someone like Colin White?
