Description
Move Ruff to player development, Hire Trotz, as far as goalies I don’t know because a lot of the goalies that NJ is reported to be looking at I hope they don’t get. They really shouldn’t get Lehner, Gibson had an off year and the price would still be high and Hellyebuck is overrated and the price would be too high. So I would sign Holtby and Blackwood and also sign extra depth unless you can make a love for a really good goalie I just haven’t heard of any that are available. The forward I would target is Matthew Tkachuk but I think he will be too expensive even though I would pay a high price as he is just the player they need. If they flames re-sign Gaudreau than the devils should look into stealing Tkachuk

I think Trotz is a great coach and very likely a bad fit for the Devils. Fans oftentimes get caught up in surface level stuff. Idk.

trotz is made for a team with established veterans like the penguins or capitals. not a young team like the devils

So much hate for Trotz on here lol. yes the guy (like most NHL coaches) is a vet first kind of guy, and I see the need for a coach that works better with younger payers... but the biggest issue last year for the NJD was defense and goals allowed. 2 top 4 D men and a better net combo would do wonders for this team.
and as a sharks fan i seriously consider that deal for Meier, as a NDJ fan i would balk.

They can’t go into next season with Ruff as HC. He isn’t working the system he runs is terrible, yes he is good at development so just move him to Player development. I already hadn’t felt good about Fitz being GM. But this decesion just proves how bad he is at being a gm

Personally I'd want Grönborg or BBQ Bruce over Trotz.
But Trotz would likely be an upgrade over Ruff imo.

I would love BBQ Bruce for this young team but I think he is staying in Vancouver

I mean, if Burns or Karlsson are traded maybe we do it. Smith is a good replacement idea in tandem with Merkley. Kuokkanen isn't interesting to us, though.

I mean, they /can/ go into next season with Ruff as HC. I don't think he's the guy to get them over the hump, and I would prefer a new head coach, but I don't think it's his fault the devils allowed like 50 goals above expected lol

Trotz is a good coach but does his coaching philosophies fit the devils identity? Maybe! they should interview him and find out. But maybe not! So they shouldn't do it in that case. It's not a black and white thing here.

Anyone is better than ruff and I think Trotz can work with any team

Objectively untrue and maybe! they should interview him for that reason.

Ruff is terrible, Fitz should be fired for keeping him it is the worse decision possible

Lamoriello is an excellent GM but his firing of Trotz could be a blessing for the Devils.
Ruff looks good when he has an all star between the pipes (Hasek and Miller).
He was idolized in Buffalo by the fans and the press, which should tell you how much they know about hockey.
I think we all know the Devils were predicted to do well this year, I knew they would not with him behind the bench.
He ruined many players here in Buffalo, as he wanted them all to play the game the same why he did.
We now have Granato as our HC, as I listen to the players interviews, they all say Granato allows them to be themselves, look how successful they have been this year, doubling the points from last year, when the predictions were for them to finish dead last.

Yeah I agree Ruff isn’t the coach for the devils

Completely agree ruff just isn’t a good coach for the devils. They can make big upgrades this offseason but the will have similar results if Ruff remains HC

You knew that the Devils would get league-worst goaltending? impressive.

Even if they had a solid Blackwood and bernier they still wouldn’t have been close to the playoffs. They would have done better but they wouldn’t be close to playoffs either

Where in my post did I say this?
The Sabres gave up only 17 fewer goals then the Devils but the Devils also scored 16 more goals than the Sabres, while the Sabres had five more wins and 12 more pts.
It is all about coaching and getting the most out of the players.
I knew Ruff was not the coach to take them to the next level.
But you are actually supporting my opinion, that unless he has a top GK his teams will be terrible, which was my point.
BTW one could argue that the Canadians, Coyotes and Wings had worse GK's

They wouldn’t have been ahead of the islanders and maybe Columbus but Hamilton also wasn’t good and they not getting a lot out of players like Tatar smith and johnsson. They would not have been the first team out

True ruff is not the guy that is going to take them to the next level, and he never was. They made a huge mistake not hiring gallant that year…. Or any other decent coach on the market. Not only has ruff not gotten the most out if some of his players but he runs a terrible system, he is constantly churning the lines which creates zero line chemistry, a key element of championship teams. He barely plays his 4th line forwards and 3rd pairing Defenders. The players always look lost on the ice like he is just telling them to go out there and do whatever he is not the guy
