If Darryl Sutter was the GM of the Flames

Description
Some background context was that before Treliving came here, Darryl Sutter,( the current coach for the Flames now) was the manager for the Flames for at least 5 years in 2005-2010 if I recall, but resigned and later on went to the Kings where he won 2 cups as their coach afterward.

Before being the GM, he was the Flames coach where he coached them to the Stanley Cup Final in 2004. Sadly, I don't know much about the Flame's prospects,

In terms of his GM track record, he seemed to like older players that play with more grit and defence while sacrificing some offence in the process. However, it shouldn't be an issue considering the NHL is now a skill based league. Also, I'm not too sure if he excels in contract negotiations, but putting Gaudreau/Tkachuk contracts as if he were to successfully sign them.

The moves are mainly a cap dump if they were to push hard on signing Gaudreau and Tkachuk. I was planning on putting Klingberg, but I think signing Gaudreau and Tkachuk are the most important priority for them.

As a result, I think he likes a veteran team with players that have grit and prioritize defense as well.

Sutter is an excellent, you can argue HOF worthy coach.

He wasn't a very good GM. Traded away picks for veterans frequently. The team drafted very poorly under him as well.

    Didn't he draft Backlund?

Interesting to hear that considering I didn't know much about the Flames during his time as GM. If that's the case, it seems he may have been a downgrade to the Flames current gm.

    Yes he did.

He was the GM for the drafts from 2004-2010.
2004- they whiffed on their 1st rounder. Drafted three bottom 6/depth players in Brandon Prust, Dustin Boyd and Adam Pardy
2005-Drafted his son Brett in the 6th round. He played 60 NHL games, the rest of their draft class played 14 games. Missed on their 1st rounder again.
2006- Missed on their 1st rounder. Got 13 games out of their entire draft class.
2007-Finally hit on their 1st with Backlund. Drafted a decent depth guy, Keith Aulie
2008- Missed on their 1st again. This was the best sutter draft to date, they drafted Brodie and Lance Bouma.
2009- Missed on their 1st. They drafted Tim Erixon in the 1st, he didn't want to sign
2010- They got Ferland in the 5th round.

It's not all on the GM, it's on the scouts too, but the GM is ultimately responsible. They drafted by my count, 4 quality NHLers with 50 draft picks.

    OMW that is bad.
I thought Darcey Regier was bad, but he did better and he had to use videos to make his picks.

Conversely Brad Treliving has drafted the following players since 2014

    Bennet (1st) / Anderson (2nd) / Kylington (2nd) / Mangipane (6th) / Tkachuk (1st) / Dube (2nd) / Adam Fox (3rd) / Valimaki (1st) / Ruzicka (4th) / Pelletier (1st) / Wolf (7th) / Zary (1st) / Coronato (1st)

Not much of a comparison between the two!

Fantastic coach, not a good GM.

He also made the Dion Phaneuf trade. Out of the 4 assets he got, Stajan was the only player that had an impact. You'd have hope for more when dealing your best D at the time.
