Description
TRADES:

1 - Still trying to find a home for Josh Bailey, since full retention for 2 years is almost identical to his buyout cost and you skip the 2 extra years of $1.1M penalty. Pittsburgh is looking at having 5 of their top 12 forwards going UFA this summer, and some of them aren't coming back. Bailey at 2x$2.5M gives them better production than they could get for that price in UFA, and lines up with their veteran core age-wise. Pittsburgh sends back an LD prospect they don't have room for right now (unless they find a way to move one of Dumo/Pettersson/Matheson) and moves up from a pick around 120ish to a pick around 60ish for their troubles.

2 - Washington makes a strong choice on their current goalie duo, putting their chips behind Ilya Samsonov and bringing in Semyon Varlamov to do for another Russian goalie what he helped do for Ilya Sorokin. Isles retain to help the Caps' cap, and for their troubles get a solid backup in Vanecek that they sign to a 2x$2M RFA bridge deal. Picks are here because I'm not sure which side would need to add, if either?

3 - Minnesota deals from a position of strength (they have 4 NHL-level LD & Carson Lambos signed for next season) and gets back a young, cost-controlled forward to help navigate the upcoming Buyout Years

4/5 - Panik didn't really get a fair shake here this season, did he? Treating Arizona like a placeholder here - he's already 50% retained from Detroit, so a lower tier squad can pick his contract up, play him regularly, and flip him with cheap retention for a pick at the TDL. Not super important to move him, but would like to see him get some regular ice time somewhere! Arizona also sends back the conditional 3rd rounder from the Ladd deal at some point.

SIGNINGS
Keep all the RFAs - bridge deal for Dobson, pay him in a couple years when some of the $5M forwards start falling off the payroll. Koivula gets some run to see if he's worth a damn, Salo and POJ fight it out for LD3 where you can give them the Dobson sheltering treatment while they get their feet under them, everyone else hangs around in Bridgeport as depth. Kept Grant Hutton as a solid "first man up" D and Ken Appleby has put up some sneaky good numbers in the last 2 seasons in the org - keep him as 3rd goalie so you don't have to rush Skarek in case of an injury.

UFA-wise, there's not a ton of room to move - a lot of this lineup is set after the trades. I think Valeri Nichushkin should be a strong target this summer - very good two-way player, feel like he'll fit in with whatever coach we wind up hiring. I like putting him on as the defensive minded first liner with Barzal and Wahlstrom. Jakub Zboril is a really interesting possibility to me - worth taking a flyer on as a 7th D since he can play both sides and slide up wherever necessary. He put up solid numbers before getting hurt in Boston last season, and will be 10 months out from his ACL tear by the time the season starts.

COL easily matches that Nichushkin offer and income tax in COL is half of that in NY meaning more take home pay to stay put

I keep hearing about the Avs wanting to be careful about long term spending with MacKinnon needing a deal in a year - I figured they keep one out of Burakovsky/Nichushkin and unfortunately let the other one walk. Not saying there's no way they can make both work, just that I'd be surprised to see them spend ~$6-7M each on those 2. If they keep Nichushkin, swap Burakovsky in his spot and pretend that I didn't retain as much on Varlamov to make the cap work.

Thew him in BPT - if I was running things, I would put Salo in as LD3 on opening night and let POJ get 20 minutes a night in Bridgeport. I think Salo is the better player right now but POJ has the potential to step up into Kulikov's spot at LD2 in 2023-24, and I would want him to get used to playing all situations. Brent Thompson couldn't develop a forward to save his life, but he's shown a pretty good knack at developing defensemen, and I think it makes sense to stick the higher potential guy with him.

They keep Nichushkin and Kuemper, Burakovsky and Kadri walk.
Year 2 EJ and Comphers deals are off the books and there’s plenty of cap space to resign MacKinnon

I'll take Burakovsky here then, like I said pretend I made the retention lower on one of those trades and put it towards whatever Burakovsky gets over $5.5M.

That Compher deal lining up with MacKinnon's UFA year is huge, it's probably the only "bad" contract hanging out on that team and it leaves just when you need it to. GMs signing deals that run for a convenient amount of time has been a long time achilles heel in the Islanders org, so I'm jealous lol

I'm good with this. This team probably is a 1st rd exit , but it gives Dobson an NHL caliber defenseman to play with and that first line can build chemistry. This offseason isles need to keep their 2022 1st unless it for Fiala, that's the only player who's worth giving up a 1st for. There's really nothing the isles can do this offseason to become contenders, so trading a bunch of assets for one player will likely send us right back into the Milbury era.

I know a lot of isles fans think a "top LD2 and top line winger" will put this team over the top, but when you factor in what it would cost, it would actually set the team backwards and into a rebuild. It was only two years ago many isles fans wanted to trade Devon Toews so they can sign Mike Hoffman...

Thanks - I tried to walk the line of upgrading the current team's flaws while trying to build up contingency depth. I think Nichushkin fits in strongly on pretty much any line you want him in this lineup, which is what they should be looking for in a winger - not necessarily a Tarasenko-like sniper, but a guy who can play a solid 200-foot game, let Barzal do his Barzal things with the puck, and finish when he needs to. And I grabbed Kulikov to give a nice bridge to Salo/Bolduc/POJ, so you can let them develop into being LD2/LD3 in 2023-24 and not rush them up. Like I said, Brent Thompson can't develop a forward unless he helped conceive them, but he's got a knack for getting defensemen NHL-ready. Let the young guys develop with him before throwing them in the fire and you can potentially roll out a very solid, young D corps in 2023-24.

I think I'm with you on this being a wild-card team at best. I still kind of want Lane Lambert to get the HC nod - the team looked sharp with him when he had to step up around the new year, and even though he's leftover from the old administration, if the room likes him they'll listen to him. It also helps that he's familiar with the roster and will be able to shape a system around them as opposed to coming in and putting a whole new gameplan in and trying to fit this very specifically-built roster around that. And if Lambert's the HC, running a decently structured defensive team, I could see Sorokin stepping up in the playoffs and putting up a little run once they get in. The plus side of this team being so veteran-heavy is that they know what to do when the games get more important.

The only think I would change is Raty should play on the 3rd line and I'd let parise drive the 4th line. I agree about Nichuskin, he is similar to Eberle offensively with less finish, but he does the little things that help Barzal. He drives possession and gives Barzal the opportunity to do what he does best, generate high danger scoring chances. With the isles lack of finishers, its important to make up for that by having more offensive zone time.

I would give Lambert the HC job (and hopefully draft his nephew), Bellows + Wahlstrom played really well for the few games he was HC, he seems to give them a longer leash.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that - I agree that Bellows & Wahlstrom seemed to click into the lineup better with him. And honestly, I'd rather try out something new than go give -another- shot to the same pile of retreads that always shows up.

Its funny that Comphers deal gets labeled the "bad" contract of the team.
Dude put up 33pts, plays PP and PK, can play C and wing, stays healthy for 3.5mil x 1 yr remaining lol

Half retaining on Varlamov and then signing a backup for 2M makes no sense. Better off just keeping Varly at that point

Minnesota accepts. I see this as a win-win trade for both teams. I'd probably sign Bellows to a longer deal. Something like 3x$1M maybe?
