Description

Here's the scenario: Edmonton loses in the first round again and McDavid is done, he requests a trade. Edmonton chooses to use Draisaitl as their 1C and tries to fill the holes in their lineup with the trade.

The conditions for the trade are as follows:
Has to be a team in a different division, plus if in the other conference
Team agrees to take on Zack Kassians contract (optional but decided to add it in the trades for balance)
Young Top 4 Defenseman, preferably RHD
Young Top 6 Player
Starting Goaltender, preferably under 28 years old
(Middle tier 1st round pick and a 3rd, negotiable)

This is an example line up so it doesn't include possible extra trades Edmonton would make, the Oilers in LTIR are players that would be traded or would stay there for retirement (Keith, Klefblom)

Detroit declines. We're not out of a rebuild yet and this trade would only prolong the pain.

Almost every trade has a team giving up 2 or 3 key players and a 1st. All that happens to a team if they do that, is that they become Edmonton. They have McDavid and maybe one other good player left, if they are lucky and aren't any further ahead. So, why do it?

A mcdavid trade where we don't give up Raymond, Seider, Edvinsson or Cossa would be pretty good. That said we would still have too many holes

I like that offer for the Oilers, if they drafted Nemec they could have a future d-core of:

Ehlers is who we’d want McDavid to play with so I wouldn’t want him included
This leaves the Jets with no goaltender of worth
Pionk is our only top 4 RHD… why would a team already hurting for RHD trade away their only top 4 one
This would just give McDavid a different team to suffer with.

The only team that can make a Mcdavid trade is probably Buffalo. Cozens, Krebs, Quinn, Peterka, Power, Dahlin etc.
Assuming EDM would only want young players and prospects.

Problem with a McD trade is that whatever team is paying the massive bounty for him they are going to end up just like Edmonton. A top-heavy team that doesn't have a quality supporting cast to win a cup. That's where Edmonton will be for years to come.

If I were Detroit I would take that trade in a second, I am not sure Edmonton would without one or two of Seider, Edvinsson or Raymond though.

If McDavid were to ask for a trade, it would be better for him to ask once the calendar ticks over to the 22-23 season so that his full NMC is in effect. So does that mean it is July 1st like most NHL contracts or was something tweaked due to the later start?

Problem is, if any of those deals were accepted, the team acquiring McDavid has just been gutted. And why would McDavid want to go to a worse team.

He'd have to pull an Eichel and so force Edmonton's hand into accepting a lesser package.

Take for instance PHI: 3 players 25 yrs or younger, two top 6 forwards and their starting goalie gone AND a top 4 defenseman under 28 yrs old, coming off his best season AND a 1st and 3rd. PHI has just lost their goalie and 2 scoring forwards, getting McDavid for that package results in a bad team.
