NJ Devils have been seeing a lot of offers on ACGM for the 2nd overall pick. They have ranged from okay to quite bad. Based on our GM's comments over last couple of weeks, here are the conditions I think he would trade that pick. In other words, offers for #2 overall should check these boxes.
-------
A. CORE PLAYER: We want to add a "core" player to add to the likes of Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Mercer, Holtz, etc. That either happens by keeping #2 pick, or in the trade.
B. PICK COMING BACK: The package should likely include a pick coming back to NJ. The original question about moving the pick was asked if he was willing to trade down and add assets. So, view a "trade down" as more likely than a "trade out"
C. TOP-6 PICK IF ITS THE MAIN PIECE: If the 'core piece' is the pick being returned to NJD, it should be in top-5. Fitzgerald has said that they see a handful of players "with similar upside" in the draft, at "different positions" (I am guessing he is talking about the top-5 or 6).
D. FILL CATEGORICAL NEEDS: The additions to the pick going back to New Jersey should be from one of a few categories of players that Fitzgerald talked about adding in his end-of-season press availability. (i) a goalie to compete, (ii) bigger and mobile dman, (iii) heavier skill on forward.
E. DON'T NEED ADDITIONAL DRAFT PICKS: The additional pieces going to New Jersey should not be draft picks. Fitzgerald has said he isn't as interested in adding picks as he is in adding young players.
F. TYPE OF PLAYER: If the 'core piece' in the offer is a player being sent to NJ, it should fit the three categories from above, but also should be age 25 or below. Fitzgerald has been consistent about adding players that are "Jack and Nico's age" (age 20-23).
-------
Thus, any trade for #2 pick should be one of he following:
1. TOP-6 PICK PLUS YOUNG PLAYER: Pick #3, #4, #5, or #6, where we could still add a core player in draft, along with a young player that fits our categorical needs
2. YOUNG CORE PLAYER PLUS LATER PICK: The player would be age 20-25 that would be a 'core' player along the likes of Hughes, Hischier, Bratt and would fit our categorical needs (goalie, heavier skilled forward) along with a later pick.
If its not, its probably not a fit for NJ.
-------
I have included the last ten offers for the 2nd overall pick on ACGM just so people have an idea of what we are seeing.
****Note: None of these fit the criteria above.****
I mean to add fiala or Meier wouldn't be a bad move. I dont think its a 1 for 1 deal but its getting that winger you want now. Personally I'd draft Cooley and trade Mercer for the winger.

Fiala maybe since it is believed he is open to playing with Nico (at least been often speculated by reporters)
Meier also Swiss, but haven't heard as much about him in that regard.
Fiala + #27 for #2
Meier + #11 for #2
Would then be the trades. Do you think MIN, SJS go for those?
MIN may need to add another piece
Using the draft pick value chart, these deals would infer that those players are worth:

Makes a great deal of sense for Minnesota and their cap situation imo. I'd say it's a slam dunk for them. SJ confuses me, not sure where they see themselves.
For NJ either one would need an extension in place before making a deal imo ... and that QO on Meyer is disgusting

I think that that fiala deal would be pretty good for both sides. maybe add in someone like greenway going back to nj as a final piece -- obviously not a "core piece," but right timeline, plays heavy, great teammate and would be a definite bottom 6 upgrade for nj
If I was the devils I would do the sharks or totes trade especially the yotes trade, getting Chychrun is good but add on Crouse who is someone the devils good really use that seems like a good trade and we aren’t gonna get more than that for the pick at least value wise
As a habs fan, you could ask for more than that and probably get it. If Anderson is a piece you really want back then i guess that package makes sense. But that second should be Calgary's first, anderson could be Farrel instead and if i was mtl i would even consider throwing Florida's first for next year on that. Gonna take an overpay to have devils even consider I know they want a PF but
Norlinder
Farrell
1st CGY
1ST FLA
is what i would be asking for if i was the devils.
Oh yeah, I mean I wouldn't do it, but the Philly one would be the only thing that'd have me thinking for a minute. Not a horrible opportunity to add multiple assets and just move to 5OA, mainly because I'm still high on Frost (Not sure why, but I feel like he could be large next year...Brink would be who I'd ask for though), but it really depends if you're all-in on Slafkovsky, or you'd settle for Nemec/Jiricek/whoever is available at 5. Scoring winger is probably the way to go though.
