Why are we giving a pick to take Panik, should be sending one to the Sabres for doing it.

If they retain 50% they certainly will.

Although he has a NMC and can simply wait a year (or til the deadline) if it's not a fit

Yeah he could wait til free agency but that'd be a pretty dick move by him. Don't think he'd treat the hawks like that. Him and toews are both very loyal to the hawks.

There's a joke in there somewhere about Pat Kane being a dick.

I think Panik is a good buy-low option for a team that just needs NHL bodies right now and doesn't want to rush prospects. He's basically been buried by the Capitals and Islanders the past few years, but I feel like a team with an open spot will be able to give him some ice time to see if he's still a decent bottom-6 winger, and then can flip him out for a better pick. He's already been half-retained by Detroit down to a $1.375M cap hit, I think that a team like Buffalo can give him 13 minutes a night on the bottom 6 and PK and let him build some value, retain him again down to $668K, and get a solid mid round pick from a cap strapped contender at the deadline if Panik plays like the solid defensive, 10-15 goal guy he had been before - kind of like what the Sharks did with Andrew Cogliano this year.

Sabres arent paying for other teams' garbage, and other teams are going to have to make it very worth it for Buffalo to even consider helping

The Sabres are not a team the "needs NHL bodies" especially when the GM has stated hes not making moves that will block young players.

The cap floor still exists, and the Sabres are going to need players making more than ELC money to get there. Right now Buffalo's got a grand total of 9 players who are signed to post-ELC contracts for next season and only $38.5M in cap obligations. Ballpark estimate, they're going to have to add ~$24M in cap to just get to the floor. Either you're going to have to figure out a way to get another Johnny Boychuk contract to float you up to the floor(and Arizona's made it so you have to -pay- for those now), or take on a few veterans to stash in the bottom 6 to bring you up. Maybe Panik's not the guy that does that, but I also think acting like flipping out the 201st pick in the draft is a bridge too far is a bit of an overreaction.

They can over spend on a goalie, guaranteeing they have an above average starter next year, this has been done a million times. Hitting the cap floor isnt nearly as hard as getting under the cap ceiling. The Sabres have no reason to spend anything for Panik or any vet you name when they can get them for cash. So yeah, if you want our cap space, you pay. Its not spending the 201st pick thats the problem, its letting teams dump garbage off on this team and not being compensated for it that is. Not only that, Panik was in the AHL. The Islanders didnt finish that much higher than Buffalo, and if the Sabres didnt lose Anderson for 4 months they easily could have made up that 4.5 game gap. So why would Panik be playing for Buffalo when he couldnt even make the Islanders roster, the Sabres have a bigger log jam

Panik might not be the fit for the Sabres (at the very least though, you can make the argument that he adds $375K to the floor if you bury him in Rochester?) but I still think they are going to have issues playing all the young guys -and- getting near the floor.

Hypothetically, here's how they look with the young guys in the lineup next year:
Skinner-Thompson-Olofsson(probably re-signs at $5M AAV)
JJP-Cozens-Tuch
Asplund-Mittelstadt-Quinn
Rustalainen-Girgensons-Okposo

Dahlin-Jokiharju
Power-RD2
Samuelsson-Bryson/Fitzgerald

UPL

Throw Bjork & Biro in as 13th/14th forwards, sign another guy for $1M to be 7th D, and you're still $12M below the floor with really only two spots to fill.

What goalie are you overpaying for? The top guys (MAF, Kuemper, Campbell) aren't signing a deal in Buffalo. Ville Husso is probably the only realistic option, but you're probably signing him to a 4/5 year deal based on -1- good season. And once you get past that you're deep in Koskinen Kountry - a whole bunch of bad goalies that aren't going to cost more than $2-2.5M on a one year deal. You run into the same problem at RD, which is the other spot that the Sabres need some help at - I don't think that they're going to go hard in the running for Letang or Klingberg, and once you get past them you're looking at the likes of PK Subban or Justin Schultz as UFAs that conceivably get you there, and do you really want to spend $4M on those types of guys?

"Ville Husso is probably the only realistic option, but you're probably signing him to a 4/5 year deal based on -1- good season." if 4 to 5 is the base (Read 4 to 5 MIll not year deal, but still were going under that assumption and gives us better numbers, 4x4.5 or 2x8.5), then add however much you need to add on top of this to hit the cap floor. 8.5 x 2 years works. he gets paid to take a shorter deal and gets to prove himself, if he doesnt work out, hes gone in 2 years, the Sabres have goalie prospects so they dont need a UFA goalie to work out, they just need someone decent to be there while the kids develop
