Trying something new

Description
This is just what I'd try to do. Not all of these deals are going to be realistic or the right teams, but this is the type of returns/value I'd look to go after.

Fiala seems to be gone regardless, instead of going with the usual suspects, I'm assuming Gaudreau leaves for Philadelphia. Sorry Flames fans.

Zuccarello is gonna be 35 and can still help another team, but the Wild shouldn't be keeping a 35 year old whose contract is going to expire before they're truly competitive again.

Dumba has overstayed his welcome here. Defensively he's still solid. Prone to the occasional gaffe but most guys are. Contract is only one year, and he won't need a raise if Dallas chooses to re-sign him. If not, a 2nd and 3rd is adequate price for a one year rental.

Please get Greenway off this team, I'm so tired of watching him be consistently inconsistent.

Guerin was interested in Trochek back when he was traded to Carolina, but didn't want to move the pieces Florida was asking for. Seems like a perfect fit for Minnesota given the other moves I've made to clear cap space.

The biggest thing is this roster accounts for Boldy's extension in the summer of 2023. They can bring back effectively the same roster in 2024 if they want to, without any additional moves. They've also acquired some extra picks in 2023 and 2024 to bolster the prospect pool and give us a better chance to be competitive coming out of the buyouts in 2025.

Additional Details:

CGY
  1. Fiala, Kevin [RFA Rights]
  2. 2023 4th round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Fiala re-signs to whatever extension Calgary fans want. The premise is Gaudreau leaves and Fiala tries to replace him.
2.
MIN
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (OTT)
  2. 2024 4th round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
He can be a veteran presence for the young guys, still plays a top 6 game. And he's by far cheaper to acquire than any of the top wingers on the market, and his contract will expire when/if they really need the money for their own guys.
OTT
  1. Zuccarello, Mats
Additional Details:
Totally unrealistic, but given his age and mounting injury problems, I would move him now. He can still be a mostly effective top six complementary winger, just don't ride him too hard or he'll be injured for the playoffs.
3.
MIN
  1. Brown, Connor
Additional Details:
Ottawa saves a little bit of money, gets 2 extra years of term with Greenway.
OTT
  1. Greenway, Jordan
Additional Details:

His trade protection drops to a 10 team NTC on July 1 (or whenever free agency starts with the weird dates they have). No idea if Ottawa will be on the 10 team list or not, but for the sake of an internet discussion, I'm gonna pretend they are not. The bigger roadblock is I don't see Guerin actually trading him.

Zuccarello doesn't speak Russian. At least not fluently, he might know some words and phrases. He is most likely staying as a mentor to Kaprizov, because Guerin and Evason absolutely love him, but it's not because he speaks Russian.

I’m not convinced Guerin is willing to move anyone of these players except Fiala. I hope I’m wrong on Dumba, but I’m not holding my breath.

Trochek is interesting though. I’ve always liked his game, didn’t know Guerin had prior interest in him.

I adamantly disagree with Guerin on most of his moves, or in the likely case of Dumba and Zuccarello, lack of moves. You're probably right, I just wanted to see what we could do without any of them.

Trochek is definitely interesting, but only if two of Fiala, Dumba and Zuccarello are moved. Otherwise it's not realistic. And even then, the third one probably has to be gone by the following season for Boldy's extension.

Yeah I definitely like the flexibility shown here. Feels like there’s at least a little more breathing room to develop players and build for the future, while also not tanking.

There’s a small pessimistic part of me that worries they’ll move on from Addison, extend Dumba when they’re allowed to, and show reluctance to trust Rossi in the top 6 over the next 2 years.

Flames decline, Fiala doesn't come close to replacing Gaudreau
