What if Johnny Hockey pulls a Taylor Hall

Created by: NHLfan10506

Description
***Not a prediction***

At the start of next season, Gaudreau will be 29, same age as Hall when he signed 1-year deal in Buffalo. Hall was about 90-120 minutes from his off-season home, about the same distance from the Rock to Gaudreau’s off-season home.

Didn’t go very well for Hall, so probably not a case study for Gaudreau to consider. Especially considering Hall was a couple years from his career year and Gaudreau is coming off his.

But if he did….

I think he pulls a panarin and goes to the highest bidder. 120pt player heading into free agency gets PAID

you have to consider that covid just happened and the cap became flat out of nowhere and no team really had capspace to sign hall long term

Yeah, at that point, he could probably afford an off-season home closer to the rink. Lol.

Only thinking would be if there were an expectation that 2023 would be better year to get a big deal over long-term (cap going up, escrow going down), would he sign a 1-year?

He probably would be better off signing 1-year at current salary and stay in Calgary.

Of course, but same principle would apply to a UFA…like Hall saw 2021 as better year than 2020 to get term-deal, Gaudreau could see 2023 as better than 2022.

Not saying is likely (t’s quite unlikely) but if he did, NJ could be Gaudreau’s Buffalo

Isn’t it like 4+ hours? I thought his family lived in the Philly suburbs. I used to take a skating class from his dad and remember Johnny being like 9 at the time and just our skating a bunch of 15-17 year olds. Pretty sure the Dad is still around there but might be wrong

Ryan Johnson is worth more than that, Sabres are only trading him because of the surplus at LD, but if they dont get something they can use they just keep him

I think the 1 year Hall deal was under very different circumstances. Hall just came off of a 27P season in 35GP and hadnt played more than 35 regular season games in each of the last 3 seasons. I think the idea was to take a short term deal and play with Eichel to increase his value so he could get a bigger deal the next offseason (obviously it didnt work out, he was even worse in BUF and then signed cheap in BOS).

Gaudreau is coming off of the most productive season of his career. Now is the time for him to cash in on a high AAV long term deal, not risk it all on a 1 year deal where he might underperform and lose out on millions of dollars

Hall played 74 games the season before he signed with Buffalo.

But I am with you on the timing.

Ah I missed that. Still think he underperformed that year which influenced his decision

No reason for the Sabres to even consider that
We’d rather have a draft pick

Gaudreau needs to find a new agent if he only signs for 1yr.

This is the best possible situation for him to get a 7 or 8yr deal in the 80 million dollar range. He's not gonna have this good a season next year, they're called career years for a reason, they only happen once. He absolutely needs to cash in now

Why? It’s not like Tyce is likely to ever do much (if anything) in the NHL

Ryan Johnson looked great this year at Minnesota
We aren’t trading a 1st round pick with promise for a 4th round pick without much

JG had 100pts + season, he will get paid.
Hall had opinion of cancer and "expert" on getting 1st OA picks, but yet talented player. He signed with Sabres to proved himself.
