I feel like these teams would decline. Rangers is a team I’d like the Canucks to trade with but I highly doubt they trade both Laf and Schneider. I also think Miller is a little too old and pricey for New Jersey and Ottawa

I think you might be overvaluing Miller a bit too much.

That deal is not close for Ottawa. Bernard-Docker, 7th overall pick and an unprotected 1st in the Bedard draft is an absurd price for a guy who will be a 30 year old pending UFA after next season.

Rangers can’t afford the extension at $7-8 mil plus so no for that reason. Plus Copp is younger and cheaper, that’s the better option given that the salary cap exists.

Never said he is better. Miller is better then him and hence will make $2-3 mil more then Copp on a long term deal. Copp is going to turn 28 (27 right now) and Miller is 29 (turns 30 next year and 31 in the first year of the deal). Copp will still be 28 after the first year of a potential extension and cheaper to sign. Miller was one of my favorite Rangers back in the day from the time he was drafted, but it doesn’t change that he’s not going to be young in an extension. So in summation Copp will play age 28, 29, 30 and 31 season and Miller will be 32 by the time he finishes the second year of his extension. It makes more sense to go with the cheaper, younger, albeit not as good player. Plus Copp has fit in really well in the top 6 and I have no clue why Winnipeg traded him.

I'm talking about when the extension kicks in. Copp is 28 all next season (Copp turns 29 after next season - July 8th). Miller will turn 30 (March 14th). In the second year of his contract, Copp will be 29 (he'll turn 30 in the summer - July 8th). That same year will be the first year of Miller's extension and he turns 31 midway through the season (March 14th). All I said is I'd take Copp who will be cheaper to sign than Miller and younger. How am I manipulating their ages?

He never said Copp was the better player, just that Copp fits the Ranger's cap situation better than Miller will long-term

Thank you. Miller is the better player, I was never questioning that. I’m just looking at the cap ramifications. I do still think Vancouver needs to keep him long term though, not the kind of piece to give up unless wanting to rebuild imo. I look at it as, you’re more likely to contend with Miller than without. I do think you guys need another top 4 d man on the right side. I’d say someone who isn’t a smaller build though as you already have Hughes who isn’t of great stature. Do you see Myers as someone to eventually move? How about Boeser? Is it safe to assume if you move Boeser you’d be looking for a quality RD? What other holes do you see in the lineup that they need to address?

Hopefully Miller agrees to a reasonable number on a contract extension if he wants to stay. Keeping Miller probably moves the contention window at least a year forward

It also sounds like Boeser is staying, and he'll be taking a contract of around 3 years of term, and around the 6 million dollar range

100% we need another top 4 defenseman, likely to upgrade over Myers in terms of defensive awareness. No disrespect to Myers, he had a solid season, but yeah, ideally the team wants a guy who is a good skater, decent size, can move the puck, but who's game is more defensive oriented. That's why a guy like John Marino has been continually associated with the team. Canucks prospect Jack Rathbone is supposedly good friends with Marino too

How was Ekman-Larsson this year? His contract is pretty large. I wonder if there’s a trade to be made for Marino and still keep Miller. If so I feel like that’d be a perfect addition to the lineup. Do you see Rathbone being an everyday player next year?

OEL had a very good bounce back season for the Canucks. Yeah, the contract still looks a bit onerous, but I don't think the Canucks are complaining, OEL was not the reason the Canucks missed the playoffs by any means

Hopeful that Rathbone is an everyday NHLer next season, he's very talented. He went through his ups and downs in the AHL this season, getting injured, getting covid, but finishing the year strong, I've still got my fingers crossed about his development being on track and him putting in a productive off-season

Canucks won't be able to acquire Marino unless they give up an asset they really like. Boeser and Horvat sound like they want to stay, so the question really comes down to whether or not Miller wants to re-sign, and at a reasonable numbers. They aren't actively shopping him, but they could flip a guy like Garland if they wanted, question then becomes what Pittsburgh wants to do. Depends if they say they are going to make Marino available, and that will depend on what happens with Kris Letang. If Letang walks, Marino ain't going anywhere, and Canucks will have to look elsewhere

Thanks for explaining above. Could you see a guy like Manson as a fit? Might be tough with needing to resign other guys, but he’s a solid RD and doesn’t cost anything to acquire but cap space.

Manson is decent, but not sure he wants to play in Canada tbh

Ah yes I forgot about that. You know who is really underrated but likely not available, Artem Zub from Ottawa. He’s signed for next year, but honestly I think he’d be a great add.

Dude, one of the first things I did when I registered on Capfriendly was make a bunch of proposals bringing Zub to Vancouver. Sens fans tried to rip my lungs out
