Goaltender is priority

Description
Been a lot of trades here to and from NJD for wingers.

But our overwhelming priority is goaltending.

----

Just think from Net/WAR perspective

Replacing Zacha with Gaudreau = +3.9 wins
Adding Ilya Samsonov = +3.7 wins

Adding Gaudreau, Boeser, Fiala, Trocheck, Garland over PZ, TT, AJ, JV, JB = +8.8 wins
Adding Ville Husso = +8.8 wins

Adding Burakovsky, Nichushkin, DeBrincat, Chychrun over PZ, TT, AJ, TS = +7.3 wins
Adding Braden Holtby = +7.2 wins

----

Some worthwhile caveats here. These are using last year stats to build next years roster. WAR stats are always very limited. And we'd never be replacing the exact minutes (ie, Gaudreau would not likely be playing same shifts as Zacha).

But it is illustrative of how big of a need goaltending is for NJD. We are a 90-pt team with elite goaltending, a 82-pt with average goaltending and, well, a 63-pt with the goaltending we've got. We'd even be a 70-pt team with Arizona's goaltending.

----

I used a few trades and signings here. Don't know about trade fits and obviously not doing all of them.

My preference would be Hellebuyck, Holtby

Fwiw you can use /60 WAR stats to smooth over the ice time thing smile

Vanacek, Driedger, and Lehner would be my 3 targets. They’ve all been the most consistent in the fancy stats I value and all seem to be gettable.

Jets say no to that. Only because I don’t think Blackwood does enough for them to justify the trade. They’d need a shiny piece in there to really get them interested in moving hellebuyck. I feel like there may be better G options available for cheaper.

      I used rates.

For goaltender, I used a tandem of X/Bernier (and X/Daws when Bernier went down).

For skaters, it was one-for-one, adjusted for minutes.

Lehner I worry about injury history.

Yeah totally fair about the injury history. I’d go for the other two before him

I’d rather go with Husso to be honest. As good as Hellebuyck is, it would come with a heftier cost to trade for him. Mac and Husso would be a nice 1A/1B combo.

I'm still shell shocked. Maybe get another Vet on top of this just to have more depth, though it maybe hard to keep him in the organization without being claimed. I can't believe I'm saying this, but losing Wedgewood really hurt.

No from Winnipeg. There simply isn't enough value or quality there. Change it to Mercer and NJ's unprotected 23 1st and you get the Jets attention.
