What Needs to be Done

Created by: Lets_Go_Bruins2024
Team: 2022-23 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2022
Published: May 15, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Bruins need to free cap for Bergeron this year and Pastrnak next year, hence a retool this offseason. Hopefully we can remain competitive and keep the window open for further success.

UFAYEARSCAP HIT

Trades
1.
BOS
  1. 2022 4th round pick (COL)
  2. 2023 1st round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Could probably be to anywhere (Bruins have depth and need to clear cap), but Detroit makes some sense as an up and coming team with need at LD. Maybe a first is a little much, but Detroit could become a legitament playoff contender if they're aggressive this offseason.
2.
BOS
  1. Ranta, Sampo
  2. 2022 5th round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Colorado is losing multiple priority free agents this offseason, and Smith is an affordable option to fill those holes and save money so they can make a run at resigning players like Kadri.
COL
  1. Smith, Craig
  2. 2022 6th round pick (BOS)

Colorado accepts I think. I haven’t watched Craig Smith play in a while so I dunno if he’s on the decline. Craig Smith’s cap hit might be a bit of a challenge to fit into the middle 6 but Ranta has had a bit of a bumpy year.

Hard pass from Detroit. No chance in hell we're trading a first for freaking Grzelcyk.

That's fair tbh. I think Grzelcyk is worth somewhere around a low 1st rounder. I did the trade assuming the Red Wings would take the next step this year, but that's assuming a lot from a team that has been in the basement for the past few years.

He's been decent and his cap hit is manageable. This is definitely a yes from the Avs.

It will be Reiily and Debrusk that are moved.

Bergy is not signing that contract. If he continues to play he’ll sign 1 year deals til he’s done. And that AAV is an insult.

Yeah I don’t think they would do this trade. Ranta has had a tough year sure, but he still has potential and it was his 1st pro year. Smith is an older less versatile, less physical Compher I can think of A LOT of ways to better spend a good prospect and $3.1M in cap space.

While the trade value to COL is fair, I wouldn’t d the deal.
COL cannot afford to continue to empty the cupboards of picks and prospects anymore. With the tight cap situation coming, it’s best to promote younger players on ELC deals vs trading for 1 year rentals to fill the holes

Why? A 33yr old non physical guy that scores 30 something points and cost $3.1M, you aren’t acquiring the 50pt Smith of NSH years.

Size, experience, scores half a point per game, good on offense and defense

How is he non physical? Averages over a hit per game. 3.1M is fair for what he provides imo

So Detroit v would take gryz but that isn't the deal, I'd prefer to pay less and take reilly.

Remaining just competitive like this season is useless, either go for a real shot at the Cup or start the retool/rebuild. Bad trade with the Avs for the Bruins, you made the forward group worse.

Take out the 1st and Detroit considered it.

Detroit is a good landing place. Yzerman is just not giving up a 1st. So i would go a 3rd or 4th and a mid-level center or LHD prospect from the Red Wings. Its a decent lineup but I think Bergeron is retiring.

He's a tough guy to value really. He's been effective with mcavoy but looks lost with carlo. I have doubts he'd be able to take the minutes playing with seider but I feel like him with hronek would be a disaster.

Yeah that was not suppose to be physical it was suppose to be about his production (sorry). He isn’t a top 6 player, He doesn’t take face offs, the majority of his starts are in the offensive zone, and maybe most importantly he doesn’t produce in the playoffs, I mean literally the last 4 playoffs 0,1,5,0 points. Way better ways to spend $3.1M.

He isnt supposed to be a top 6 player. I think 3RW is a good spot for him.

His oZS% was 51.9%, pretty much even

Playoff production history for depth players isnt as important as it is for star players + goalies imo. Each year is usually such a small sample size and it varies a lot year to year - look at Kadri in TOR - the narrative was that he could never be a playoff performer and would always get suspended and now hes scoring over a point per game in the postseason in COL. A lot of UFAs this year actually have poor histories of playoff production: Trocheck, Rust, Jarnkrok, Domi, Mikheyev, Niederreiter, Copp, etc (with some of them actually producing this year which just shows how playoff production varies)

There are definitely other ways to spend that $ (probably better ways tbh) but I dont think Smith is a bad option at all

Realistically though, Sampo is going to turn 22 at the start of next season. He hasn’t shown that he will be able to put together all of his tools at the NHL level. His ceiling is high, but he’s realistically looking like an NHL 4th liner/AHL tweener.

The Avs need to replenish the cupboards, but Ranta is not a can’t miss prospect anymore unfortunately.

I think Bowers ship has sailed in terms of being an everyday NHLer. I still think guys like Ranta and Kaut can be decent 3rd line players

I think it’s a waste of resources when there are always options out there for guys like that.

laugh On what planet is Grzelcyk worth a potential top 10 pick in the deepest draft in over 20 years? We don't need Grzelcyk when we have the best LD young core in the NHL coming up here shortly.
