Remaking the D and the 2nd line

Created by: edeangel84
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: May 16, 2022
Published: May 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
My UFA Predictions:

Geno to Arizona: They have money to burn and he can enjoy a couple years in the heat of the desert being their name to draw people to whatever new arena they get

Letang to Vancouver: I honestly think we will resign him in the end but I would be ok with remaking the whole blueline. Everyone is saying Montreal but that is a clear rebuild and their cap space is limited. Rutherford knows him and I think that could help get him to Vancouver who then looks to move Tyler Myers

Rust to the Wings: He goes home and gets paid. Something like 7 million x 6 years

Sid would not be very happy with this team. I feel like they have to keep one of Letang, Rust or Malkin. Letang is my vote to stay.

Why would Sid not be very happy with this team? These aren't teenagers. It is a business and he is an adult who understands things change. He still has Jake on his line and Rakell back who he started to develop some chemistry with. Tanger at 3 years is worth resigning but if he gets over 8 million and more than 3 years like I think he will it is best to say goodbye. I want no part of Malkin returning

The defense has no true #1 and outside of that top line you wouldnt be able to compete in the east.

The Kings are not in a position where they can trade Matt Roy.

??? You have Doughty and Durzi. That doesn't include Spence and Clarke waiting in the wings. It is the LHD where you guys are lean and POJ plays on the left.

You want to give Trochek 6.5m? I'd rather have Geno at the 6.6m he's rumored to want. Trochek is overrated because he was born in Pittsburgh.

My argument isn't the amount of RD the Kings have. It's the stylistic play of Matt Roy that they can't replace just yet. Every one of the D (outside of Doughty, who is good at everything) you mention are offensive-minded guys who aren't used in extensive shutdown roles. That is the opposite of who Matt Roy is. Currently, Faber is the future replacement for Matt Roy, but until he is ready to play 20 minutes in the NHL (think a year or two down the road) the Kings don't have anyone to take on the minutes or situations that Matt Roy plays in.

Sean Walker is someone that the Kings would be willing to move, though. He's in the same bent as Durzi, Spence, Clarke, and Grans.

Why wouldn't they offload Dumo vs. playing him on the third paring? I'd rather have POJ stick around and play that spot. Would not trade Marino either.

Have you seen him play hockey? Because if you have you wouldn't say that. He has been one of the best players in the entire playoffs. Geno is done as a top player in this league

I don't see Marino as anything more than a 2nd pairing RHD. He is not going to be Letang's replacement so I would rather cash in on him while we can. Dumo is not going to hold a lot of value due to age, injuries, and one year left

Ah yes, paying guys for small sample sizes but not seasons of mediocrity before that.

All the while ignoring Geno putting up 40g pace, and a ppg in the regular season and still putting up 1 less point then Trochek in the 1 round.

Geno put up over half of his points on the PP. That is all he is good at anymore. You can't have a guy who is a 5 on 5 liability half the time making 6.6 million a year at 36 years old. It is a bad idea. I am not saying they won't resign him but it would be a mistake

Geno had an xGF of 54.27%. Sid had an xGF of 54.47%. Biggest different likely causing the final results? Quality of teammates. Sid plays the majority with Jake, Rust, Letang. Geno plays with Heinen, Kapenan, Matheson.

One of those groups is not like the other. Geno's "liability" is more likely due to his poorly chosen linemates than it is his play. When they swapped Rakell to Sid's line and Rust with Geno, Geno's line went 9 gf, 7 ga. Big difference when you give him a bonafide top winger.

Especially for three guys who wouldn't be an improvement over anyone at their position whom we already have and a future second. (Kapanen is no improvement on Kempe, Arvidsson or Kaliyev; Joseph is no improvement on Anderson or Bjornfot; and Legare is no improvement on Kupari, Turcotte or Fa-gem-o.)

Is Sean Walker going to be ready to play next year? If so he could be of interest
