If a trade for Kevin Fiala turns out like the trade for Sam Reinhart

I know what you're thinking.

You're probably thinking that Ottawa owes Minnesota the 7th overall pick and a blue-chip prospect.

The problem is that when Fiala's new team signs him, he'll take up a massive chunk of their cap space.

That will be taken into account.

And also, nobody's trading away Top 10 picks on a silver platter.

For anything, really.
MIN
  1. Meriläinen, Leevi
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
It's why I think we might see a trade for Fiala like the one for Sam Reinhart.

For those of you who think that Reinhart is not a good comparable for Fiala ...

I recommend using the NHL player compare on Sportsnet to get a snapshot on the comparison between Reinhart and Fiala.

Cheers.

I see your point here, but move the 1st to 2023 because the round *does* matter (neither team should have a problem with that) and a skater is involved not a goalie. Merilainen is not the same caliber prospect as Levi.

Minnesota isn't trading fiala for a 2nd round pick and 3rd round G prospect who will just end up stuck in AHL. There's a difference between devon lee, something Buffalo needed. Minnesota doesn't with jasper wallstedt

Respectfully Sensonfire,

how do you go from offering 7OA + Greig + Sanderson for 2OA
https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/3243308

to offering THIS for Fiala

the prospect in this case would need to be better imo but i agree that i think the fiala trade will end up being for less than wild fans would probably want because of their cap squeeze

The cap squeeze is what makes him available, but the going rate will be determined by how many teams are serious about bidding on him. I know OTT wants him and I’m pretty sure NJD does as well, that kind of makes the cap constraint a moot point because OTT is now bidding against NJD and not the MIN situation.

The cap space needed to sign Fiala vs the cap space needed for whoever is picked at 2nd overall.

It's a big difference.

This is a big reason I think the 1st round pick will be a 2023. Pick 7 is more reasonable to give up than pick 2 but they are both stretches and it’ll come down to the prospect rather than the pick IMO.

I think the Sabres if interested in Fiala could make a good offer...the Fla 1st and the signing rights to Minnesota Golden Gopher LD Ryan Johnson. If the Wild feel they are set at LD, maybe one of the Russian prospects the Sabres have drafted in the last couple of years (one that wasn't a first round pick)

You have to compare Fiala’s 21-22 season to Reinharts 20-21 season. Fiala’s season this year was far better than Reinharts season last year.

Last year, Reinhart was playing for Buffalo though.

That’s not my problem😂😂 GMs trade for players based on what they’ve most recently done. If someone were to trade for Reinhart this off season, he would be worth a whole lot more than last off season.

If Reinhart would have put up the numbers he did this year, last year with Buffalo, he would’ve gotten much more then he got dealt for, exactly what minny is going to get.
