Mr Juicys Offseason

Created by: Mr_juicy
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: May 16, 2022
Published: May 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Based on having the timeline that we will compete for the playoffs the following season. Also assuming Myers/OEL are unmovable. Zucker/Monahan acquired along with assets, hoping that they would rebound somewhat and perhaps be able to be moved for an asset at the deadline. If not, their contracts expire after this season. Roster is still good enough to be competitive, outside shot at challenging for a playoff spot.

VAN would much rather keep Schenn, They value him immensely also he is stable partner for Hughes. VAN is also looking to re-sign Boeser. Not the return VAN would want for Miller. Monahan is a walking band-aid and is probably LTIR.

Rangers have no cap space to re-sign Miller, so no thanks. He's not worth that much for 1 season.

Nucks say no to the Pens trade... maybe Garland but not Boeser

I think the value for Miller is fair though

1. Trading Schenn is because Marino was acquired. If they want to play Rathbone, there's not enough room on D. Marino would stylistically be a good fit for Hughes as well. This is based on OEL and Myers being unable to be moved. He is great value for his contract but let's not kid ourselves, he is what he is. If you can get value for him and replace him with someone better (like Marino), it's a no brainer.
2. They're looking to re-sign him if it's a reasonable deal. They were also exploring trading him throughout the season. This deal is to take on some additional cap short term, while upgrading the D and ditching the Poolman contract. PIT might be interested if they are willing to give it one more go. Zucker is a cap dump at this point, but perhaps playing top 6 increases his value enough to move him for something at the deadline.
3. Not ideally, but this is a realistic trade. If nothing else presents itself, and his contract demands are too high, he should be moved. This at least adds a pick and a couple of decent prospects. I agree that in a perfect world, you would want more, but I'm trying to be conservative with the trades.
4. Taking Monahan for a pick is to get an asset for the future, see if there's a chance he can bounce back (might be a small chance, but a chance nonetheless). Maybe he plays well enough to contribute and perhaps bump his value up to the point where he can be moved at the deadline with retention for another asset. I haven't read anywhere that suggests he will be on LTIR for the year so not sure where you are getting that from. He was already playing poorly, more chance of optimism from this surgery than not.

These trades are based on setting yourself up for playoffs in 2 years. This year they need to think long term, get some assets and clear cap. I think this roster is still good enough to potentially contend for a playoff spot.
