EXPLANATION

(trade explanations are attached to them)

Core 4 stays, they showed up.

RE-SIGNED:
Campbell: $4M x 3. Gets deserved pay day. May have priced himself out of town if he had a better 2nd half.
Engvall: Most improved player on the team IMO. Likely gets settled in arbitration.
Spezza: Great locker room guy who still put up a respectable 12 goals this year. Obviously he may retire which would leave that $750K to sign a FA 4th liner.
Liljegren: Great rookie season. 3-year bridge to keep the AAV low.
Sandin: Same as Liljegren except AAV is lower as he didn't play as much.
Giordano: SOUNDS like he'll take a very team-friendly deal.

ADDITIONS: Nichushkin brung in to provide a physical presence while providing good secondary offence. Anderson, Steeves, Robertson & Kallgren are all cost-effective young players who are ready to take the next step in depth roles.

SUBTRACTIONS: I would've loved to re-sign Mikheyev but he has priced himself of Toronto (maybe his UFA rights are dealt). Blackwell and Lyubushkin deserve better opportunities than what they would have here. Kerfoot dealt to create space for upgrade (Nichushkin) and improve draft capital. Holl moved becuase, similar to Boosh, he'll have a better opportunity elsewhere. Mrazek dumped for obvious reasons. Kase is a great player but is too injury-prone and likely too expensive for what his role would've been.

Line 1: Friedman wonders if JT would be better suited for the wing. I agree. His only weakness seems to be speed and as a center these days you kinda need speed to drive a line. His offence will likely improve with less defensive responsibilities. Can still be a faceoff guy. Tavares-Matthews-Nylander may be the NHL's best line.
Line 2: Marner moves down to 2C. He played C in junior so nothing is new here. He has the speed, defensive awareness and play-driving ability needed in a Top-6 C. Will have weaker matchups too. Bunting and Marner already have chemistry and Nichushkin would be a great complementary piece.
3rd Line: Shutdown line. All 3 of Robertson, Kampf and Engvall are good defensively but can also provide secondary scoring. All PKers.
4th Line: Spezza mentors 2 young guys who had terrific AHL seasons. Lots of potential here.
1st Pair: Rielly and Liljegren both have lots of mobility and offensive potential. Both of their defensive games also improved this season.
2nd pair: Muzzin & Brodie looked dynamite in the playoffs as the shutdown pair. Would mostly be relied on PKing and protecting a late lead.
3rd Pair: Sandin has a responsible partner in Giordano to mentor him and help him improve his defence. Giordano has played over 1,000 games so the right side shouldn't be a huge challenge.
Goalies: Soup proved that he can be a starter in this league. Kallgren played well in a small sample size - will battle with Woll for backup job I'm assuming.
Depth: Simmonds and Dahlstrom there for injuries. Will be sent down numerous times during the year to help accrue cap space for the deadline.

Trades
1.
TOR
    Future Considerations
    BUF
    1. Malgin, Denis [Reserve List]
    2. Mrázek, Petr
    Additional Details:
Buffalo gets veteran goalie with decent track record for free. Malgin's rights could be appealing as he would have a larger role which may persuade him to come back over to NA after a very successful season in Switzerland.
    2.
    TOR
    1. 2023 4th round pick (MIN)
    Additional Details:
Leafs add draft capital while creating a much-needed $2M in cap space.
    MIN
    1. Holl, Justin
    Additional Details:
Minnesota receives a cost-effective D-Man who has proven in the past that he can be reliable. Getting bargains like this will help lighten the pain of the dead cap space left behind by the Parise and Suter buyouts. Holl would likely not have his hometown team on his 10-team No trade List.
    3.
    TOR
    1. 2022 2nd round pick (STL)
    2. 2022 7th round pick (WPG)
    3. 2024 5th round pick (WPG)
    Additional Details:
Leafs give up their most versatile forward but bank $3.5M in cap space in hopes to get an upgrade on Kerfoot. 2024 5th turns into 2024 3rd if Kerfoot re-signs in Winnipeg.
    WPG
    1. Kerfoot, Alexander
    Additional Details:
Winnipeg gets their new Andrew Copp without giving up anyone off their roster. This trade is completed before July 1 so Kerfoot's M-NTC can't negate the deal.
    4.
    TOR
    1. 2023 4th round pick (NYI)
    2. 2023 7th round pick (NYI)
    NYI
    1. Kase, Ondrej [RFA Rights]
    Additional Details:
It sounds like the Isles want to get more skilled so Kase could be a good fit.

Minnesota declines. Love your spin on Justin holl to make it sound positive. Minnesota has 8 good d under contract and isn't taking on cap dump on their cap. Doesn't as always have to be holl to Minnesota leafs fans

I think Adams would be better off offering Campbell $6MM or more to steal him away. With the lack of cap space, teams like buffalo are not going to do any favors if its not a dramatic improvement that gets them to the playoffs. And they have a ton of cap to spend just to get to the floor after sheading all the older players in favor of youth.

And they are all offering Mrazek and Holl for your best players and a 1st.

If anyone including buffalo wanted Mrazek they could have had him for free already since he was on waivers. No one did so that means he is a toxic asset which will require a sweetener to move.

While Campbell would clearly be significantly better than Mrazek, he’s not at the top of my list of choices either

Here is my question. Should the hero be called “Leaf Blower” cause he is blowing the Leafs away? Or should the villain be called “Leaf Blower” cause of they are always “blowing the Leafs.”

I like this. I would say maybe give Willy a chance at center instead of Mitchy instead. Also possibly get a better 7th D instead of Dahlstrom, possibly Phillipe Myers? I think Engvall could get less, maybe 1.85 x 2yrs. Also if Campbell walks could you see Husso as a realistic option to replace him?

I’m assuming that is from the Toronto Sun, the only newspaper IK of with a Wikipedia page which proudly declares that it is an example of Tabloid Journalism.

Sportsnet, TSN and the toronto Star quickly were carrying the water for Dubas and running it back within 10 min of the game ending on saturday.
