Cap hell year one the run it back version

Created by: Easportzz
Team: 2022-23 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: May 16, 2022
Published: May 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Took a crack at a “run it back one more time” approach.
Bunch of reasons I don’t see it:

Relies on Fiala staying and I think there are parts of that relationship with Coach Evason that have him looking forward to a new team.

Relies on Middleton taking a short cheap deal - of all the guys to take less to stay he seems like a possibility. He was so obviously over the moon coming to play on this team that he might take less.

Requires MAF earning less than 50% of last year salary. I think he sees writing on the wall of difficulties with cap and there is no real reason for him to take substantially less to play in a team with an uphill road due to the salary challenges.

Would this version of 1st, top prospect and nhl player get the job done for a Chychrun deal?
Finally even this masterpiece of trying to keep it together leaves the 2023 team in rough shape when Boldy will need a new contract.

Certainly a team with cap....a non playoff team isn't trading a first rounder for one year of 6m Dumba.

I would think you would have to add more to the Arizona deal.

I think that an extension would have to be part of that - agreed if he wasn’t going to extend with them they’d never do it

So now you ask your assistant captain who has a M NTC to" Hurry up and sign an extension with Vancouver because we don't want you on our team. But hey if you don't sign with Canucks you are welcome back with the Wild next season. I want to be in on that conversation. Even at that I don't how Dumba really fits into Canucks cap.

Addison + MN's 1st isn't enough for Chychrun. Jost doesn't really add much for value (3rd/4th round pick). Add in a pickem of Beckman, Marat K, Hunt, ROR, or Peart and it's closer.

Dumba for a pair of 2nds is more likely. If it's a 1st cap will have to come back to MN.

You have the sequence of events a bit wrong but I was agreeing with your point that the deal for a one year player wouldn’t work. I don’t follow the canucks, not sure how well Dumba fits. That is part of fun of these things is fans from other teams give feedback - and they have been other Vancouver fans who thought a 2nd round value for Dumba would work. The Wild can’t keep his salary. And if you read up top there are a bunch of things that have to happen for this - of any one of them don’t work then it all falls apart. The point of this scenario is sort of to illustrate how difficult staying competitive at least with this core will be over these three years of cap hell Suter/Parise buyouts.

The real only logical trade the the Wild have is to trade Fiala. He has no trade restrictions, his contract is coming up, and he still is a RFA Now he is one player who can be traded with a type of sign and trade. There are four teams who might be very interested, Sens, Devils, Sabres and Wings. All have cap and a high pick in this years draft.
I really don't see where there is market for Dumba as his cap this season, and his pending UFA really decrease his trade value. I know Wild fans don't want to trade the "controllable: Fiala, but really the cap and trade value makes him the logical candidate to go.

Dumba isn't worth a lottery pick especially with one year left

Fiala was about as good as gone as soon as he refused to sign a long-term (underpaid) team friendly deal last offseason. Him going a ppg for the season is the exact opposite of what needed to happen if there was any chance of MN keeping him.

If Dumba doesn't agree to a team friendly (big paycut) long-term extension before the draft I see him being shipped out too.

It's just wishful thinking by Wild fans, to me that's clear as day

100% when a team is as cap strapped as the wild no one is going to give you a freebie to help you out

Agree with you. If Wild are happy with their Dmen, especially the young ones on the horizon, don't resign Dumba and spend that cap elsewhere.

I don't think the young one on the horizon matter one bit. I think it's a re-sign soon or lose him for nothing in a year type of situation for GMBG. MN should be in the Playoff picture next year at the TDL, so it's really hard to trade away your 1RD in that spot. Chances are if you couldn't re-sign Dumba for cheap after this season it won't be possible after next season either.
