Focusing on the new core

Description
This is a bare bones, minimal moves guess at where the Stars will be at next year.

I expect a few things to happen: a new head coach, no free agent roster retention except Wedgewood, and the breaking in of two of three forward prospects (Bourque, Johnston, Stankoven).

EDIT: Only Johnston makes it now in this mock-up.

Johnston has owned the OHL all year as an 18 year. Bourque has the best PPG in the QMJHL and is older and bigger than Stankoven, but both probably need development. To me, the Seguin, Benn, and Suter contracts are pretty much dead weight at this point that the team just needs to eat while setting up for 3-4 years from now. I can only see Seguin possibly having a revitalization of his career, so maybe having a young stud like Johnston may help him play at least like a player getting paid 5 million.

The new core is: Heiskanen, Oettinger, Hintz, Robertson, Harley, Johnston, Bourque, and Stankoven if prospects can pan out. IMO this is a pretty solid base that can build a contender.

If you're sold on Oettinger, a four year deal doesn't seem that great for the Stars. He can be a UFA at the end of that deal. Dallas has the cap,,,would 6m X 6 years be better?

I don't think Bourque makes the team next year. He needs a year or two in the AHL.

You are probably right, I can see Shesterkin's deal as a fair comparable

I changed it, he would probably light up the AHL like Robo did for a year.

I think this team has the potential to be competitive. If this younger and more skilled roster can put up more goals than last years team (not much!) and they play average defense, they could finish in the wild card again. The floor for this team is probably around where the Ducks were this year.

Gurianov is not going to take a pay cut even though his production has dropped. If they're going to lowball offer it, might as well explore a trade for his RFA rights.

A lot will depend on if Jim Nill is kept around or not. Nill likes to do bridge deals (with the exception of Miro and Klinger). I'd look at Thatcher or Vasilevskiy's first bridge deal as a comp Dallas would go for.
