With retention it's more than just the 1st imo. Ottawa puts Connor Brown at 1.8mil on the market and get a dozen playoff contenders calling. Nearly impossible to find that kind of cap value, even if it's just one year. Plus you gotta pay the Ontario tax imo, no reason for Ottawa to make it easy for Toronto.

I think fundamentally the deal makes sense though.

I have been looking at the fit/money for Nylander to VAN. Could a Nylander/Holl for JT/Garland work for VAN? Or a Nylander/Kerfoot for JT/Garland? Maybe a bit of retention on JT, but both trades are almost a wash dollar wise.

Canucks probably don’t want Holl because he’s just not very good. I doubt Kerfoot would be the main piece going to Vancouver if they trade JT or Garland

I don't disagree with your main point, but when has there ever been an "ontario tax" when Ottawa and Toronto have traded previously.

I think Nylander for Miller straight up is a loss for Toronto, I definitely wouldn't want to add assets to make it happen. Sure, Miller is cheaper but he's not better and he's a UFA in a year. At best, they are very similar players but with age and contract I would prefer to keep Nylander.

I'd love to trade some futures for Bo Horvat, but I doubt Vancouver is interested in that.

Giving up a first for Connor Brown seems like the ultimate in terrible asset management. No thank you.

Nylander is the main piece that would go to VAN, as per both suggestions. He would/could be a fit for the Canucks.. Holl or Kerfoot would be to balance the cap hits, as both teams likely can't take on more money either way. Kerfoot might be more of a need than Holl, but just spit-balling what dollar for dollar could look like.
