Change of franchise players - TOR

Created by: justaBoss
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 18, 2022
Published: May 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
DISCLAIMER: I know it's not going to happen and I'm not even going to suggest it does, I'm just curious to see what a deal like this would look like.

I know it's not going to be a popular post since it involves the change of your most prominent franchise player but I'm just curious to see what the teams would look like. Ideally the trades would be pretty equal in terms of money being moved. As for the value, I'm leaving that as a question mark because I know both Leafs fans and Dallas fans are likely going to say their package holds more value in the end for whatever reason, whether it's the quality of the players involved or the contracts etc.

Benn kills it for me. His contract sucks. Replace him with Pavs and then we can talk.

Well as I said in the description I've tried to make the money equal. Pavelski is $4M cheaper than Benn. So if I did that I'd have to replace Brodie with Sandin to make the money work.

get ready for "MATTHEWS WILL COST YOU YOUR WHOLE PROSPECT POOL"
but honestly i'd personally be opposed to that deal. heiskanen and hintz are awesome pieces, but like saskleaf said benn kills it. that being said, matthews is a 60 goal scorer, and i personally think he could hit 70 (had close that pace this year with a 67G pace).
to me, if that deal was just matthews i might do it, but im probably unnaturally high on matthews

Yeah the value is going to cause debate as said in the description. Overall Matthews is clearly the best player here but his contract doesn't compare to Heiskanen's, and both of them are franchise level players.

So in a year Toronto would have to pay Hintz top line center money and still have 9,5 mil Benn on the books. That alone is a no for them.

They are not trading Matthews for package involving 38 yrs old Pavelski. If anything Toronto could use additional cap space for roster depth, but still, big market team isn't trading top 3 player for anything. He makes them too much money.

I personally wouldn't include him (makes no sense for Dallas to spend 3/4 of their best assets) for Matthews, but the addition of Nylander and Sandin might make it worth it. Probably not.

Overall it's a trade that is bad for both, and I never said this is a viable idea. I just wanted to see how the teams looked if there was a swap of franchise level assets, top line forwards and two veterans. The fact that I had to include Benn here is strictly for monetary reasons because even as it stands the package DAL is taking here is more expensive than other, Benn included.

Wouldn’t be opposed to your second suggestion, though I think Dallas should add a first round pick.

It really isn't. Our D is f*cked for years to come and if we have to keep Benn it makes re-signing one of Matthews or Nylander in 2024 almost impossible.

We might get marginally better for two years or so but then it's a massive decline.

Fair enough, in the long term it would benefit Toronto a little more, but in the short term is is a massive steal.

This trade would be a bit like the Kawhi trade in some ways, with Matthews being Kawhi and Heiskanen being DeRozen. I really can't see why Dallas would turn down this trade if it was offered.

Because we're not even close to good enough to actually reap the benefits from it.

We'd need to be in the level of Tampa to consider pulling this off. Top contender with little to no concern for future.

You guys almost beat Calgary. Adding Matthews to the team easily puts you in the 3rd round, maybe the finals. You have a legitimate chance at a cup.

Subtracting Heiskanen means we let 1-3 goals more in each game, we'd lose the series in 5 game against CGY. There's no way around it, Heiskanen has been one of the best individual D-men in these playoffs. I'd argue only Makar has been better.

If subtracting Heisk makes you let in 1-3 more goals than before, adding Matthews and Nylander makes you score 2-4 more goals.

Well, obviously in the hypothetical scenario when Matthews is aquired, Bones is fired.

im not 100% sure about franchise in terms of heiskanen, but then again i dont know too much about him so im gonna trust you on this one

Man's Top10 D in the league, will become Top5 eventually when Dallas gets a more offensive mindset. In two-way gave he's just as good as anyone.

I don't know if you watched the DAL-CGY series but the man dominated when on the ice.

I'd say he's a franchise D, yeah.
