That's actually not better than the RFA compensation at all for that contract at all. Not even close

The RFA compensation for a 7x7.8M is 4 first rounders

Um.... no its not.

It's only a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd.

The only way a team is ever compensated with 4 1st's is if the offersheet is over $10,503,721.

The offer posted is still crap. But the OG poster isn't technically wrong here.

The contract signed is actually a $12.48m/yr OS. Since it can't be an 8 yr deal, even at 7 years and the same money it's a 10.92m/yr OS. The division is based on 5 or less year deals. Anything over 5 years it's the total contract value divided by 5.

You linked the calculator, and it's a 4 1st OS.

No, because this wasn't ever an offersheet.

It's strictly a trade and sign, the OG poster simply stated that the value sent is greater than an offersheet of the same AAV pricepoint listed, which is $7.8M, would bring. They're not wrong.

After trading for Fiala's rights, he's then signed to a 8-year extension at $7.8M AAV. Where are you getting the $12.4M number from anyway?

He can not sign an 8 year deal anywhere except MN.

You brought up the OS compensation and linked the calculator. The price when you put those numbers in is 4 1sts.

He can sign an 8-year extension with any team that holds his RFA rights. Which will exist for at least another year. Until his age 27 offseason. Whomever he's traded to will have that option to do so if they so desire, for at least all of next season. After which he'll become an UFA, and will be eligible to only sign an 8-year extension with his current team.

The 7-year max signing vs an 8-year extension thing only counts if he's an UFA signing with a new team during Free Agency. So long as he's still an RFA, even with arbitration rights, he is still eligible to sign an 8-year extension provided said team owns them. Or if age 27 or older with whichever team he currently plays for.

As for the offersheet thing. I only linked it because it shows the compensation packages for the various AAV ranges. That's all. I never used it.

Strictly speaking, a AAV compensation package for a $7.8M offersheet is a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd. Which is technically what the poster is going off of. Not so much the term. If a offersheet is longer than 5 years, then yes, it goes up. But if we're going by just the AAV, then this offer is more than what the compensation is.

That was my point more or less. But, I'm not going to argue about term length though.

I encourage you to do this test yourself. Go into ACGM and sign an RFA to that exact contract. Since it was an 8 year contract, and the RFA compensation takes the total salary over a 5 year contract if the offer is anything over that, meaning it would be 4 first round picks

It's not viewed as 8×7.8M by the calculator, it's viewed as a 5×12.5. Which easily exceeds the $10,503,721 threshold. Sure, the AAV doesn't by itself, but if that is your argument when making a trade, then at least be accurate. The OP was not.

It's a worse justification than actual trade offer. Because once you mention RFA contract compensation, the first thing any logical fan will do is look at the contract
