Contenders 2017-18 (Shipachyov, Shattenkirk, Schmaltz)

Team: 2017-18 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2017
Published: May 1, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Girardi buyout hurts cap situation a bit but it is necessary; hopefully by 2019-20, NYR can trade Staal since his contract will only have two years remaining (or NYR can buy him out); Shipachyov gets a test run and is probably let go after 2017-18 so Zibanejad and Hayes take over as 1-2 punch

no way you get a first AND Schmaltz for just Stepan. Schmaltz is younger. Maybe you get a 2nd in like the 2019 draft. I can't see a first. Thats a long shot

I disagree, pretty strongly. Stepan is on a long term deal and wouldnt be a cap dump, hes an actual good player and would fight Statsny hard for that 1st line center spot. Schmaltz is an alright player but his development has definitely not come along as planned. Washington's first round pick and Schmaltz for stepan would be a good deal for STL Schmaltz will be 24 before next season starts and he hasnt even played one full NHL season, what makes you think he provides significant trade value? If anything, Schamltz and a late first round pick in a shallow draft is not enough for stepan.

Whether the value is fair or not, STL can't realistically add a $6.5M player without shedding some cap. I'd love to sandwich Stepan between Schwartz and Tarasenko, but Parayko needs a new contract and STL is strapped for cash as it is. STL will have a quiet offseason unless they can move out some of their middle-dollar contracts (Gunnarsson, Perron, Sobotka, Lehtera). I doubt Schmaltz would be in play.

If St. Louis wasn't in a cap crunch, what would you give for Stepan?
