In my opinion, Wahlstrom has shown more than Zadina so far. However, I think Zadina has more potential. I think in this situation, both guys stick with what they have.

Wahlstrom has that cannon shot. I'd take him. But if Zadina can ever figure out how to score, he's better all around.

I think it's basically a wash; I think if this trade were to be made in real life, though, Detroit adds a little something considering that Zadina just burned his ELC and Wahlstrom has one year left on his - that alone makes him slightly more valuable to the Islanders.

Wow last time I saw this trade the Isles fan went off. I do think Wahlstrom has shown more but at this point I don't think Zadina's potential is all that high anymore.

I am by no means saying either team should make this trade. I personally think Zadina is the better overall player. Both players were buried in the lineup by coaches that didn't love their game. I am just curious what each teams fans think of the trade.

Wahlstrom had a very mediocre year. I was looking at the 2018 draft and was surprised to see how poorly he did this year. I think all Islanders fan assumed he would play with Barzal all year and put up 30 goals.

Wahlstrom may also benefit from a coaching change. Trotz favoured vets over young players. He had a defense first philosophy. Lambert will run a similar system as he learned from Trotz. But he might allow for a bit more offense so Wahlstrom could thrive. Wahlstrom is a rare player who can score from distance because of his shot.

Yeah but I still think Detroit should keep Zadina and see how he does under a new coach. I'm just not as optimistic as I once was.

This is another reason I wouldn't do this deal one-for-one - Wahlstrom got jerked around the lineup all year and got bottom-6 minutes, especially the last 2/3 of the year (his first 26 games: 8-7-15, 13:14 TOI; last 47 games: 5-4-9, 11:25 TOI). If Lambert can give the "kids" a little more leash, I think you can see Wahlstrom make the leap next year that we all hoped he would've made this year. And I have no idea why they don't just give him the Ovechkin role on the power play - he has such a good shot it seems crazy not to try and play for that at least every once in a while.

This is a big year for Wahlstrom. Post-Trotz he will hopefully have the opportunity to play regular top-6 minutes and not be benched for small mistakes.

Analytically Wahlstrom has been the better player over the past two seasons despite playing with worse linemates than Zadina.

Kind of hard to score 30 goals when you’re taken off the both PP units (at the time Wahlstrom was leading the team in PP goals) and playing 6-8 min a game.

Back in December Wahlstrom had a stretch where he put up 13 pts inn 13 games despite playing under 10 min most games. Trotz was asked why he doesn’t get an increased role and he gave some BS answer. A young player who had that kind of production would have been rewarded. Confidence is important for a young player, hard to keep producing when you’re not being put in a position to succeed and not given proper ice time

Like I said upthread, they just need to stick him in the Ovechkin spot on the power play and have him let it rip. Not saying he's going to match Ovi's numbers, but he's got that kind of heavy shot that will find its way home plenty.

It was frustrating to see Trotz giving Wahlstrom sub-10:00 every night even after the team was out of playoff contention. If there's *any* time to give the kids extra run and lengthen the leash, it's when the games don't really matter! I still am thankful for Trotz pulling us out of the post-Tavares wilderness and making us a respectable team, but I think he just got too stubborn about things being done precisely, oftentimes to his own (and the team's own) detriment.

Two straight years Wahlstrom has a great 3-4 week stretch where he was a PPG player. Almost every coach rewards that’s kind of accomplishment with top 6 minutes. Not Wahlstrom. Towards the end of this season he was put in a 4th line checking role and fans were shocked Wahlstrom couldn’t produce.

The change of scenery with Lambert should benefit him, I don’t think there’s a coach out there who’s worse with young forwards than Trotz. I expect a 25-25 season from Wahlstrom next season.

Detroit accepts, But Lou passes. Right now Wahlstrom is clearly the better player over Zadina.
