Starting From Scratch - The New Leafs Rebuild

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 19, 2022
Published: May 19, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team isn't winning anything. It is time to blow it up and recoup draft picks, prospects and younger players.

The Dubas-led Leafs was constructed wrong. It was not built on solid foundations. Stanley Cup teams are built from the net out. The Leafs have no goalie and no true number one defenceman.

The real issue has been cap space. The Tavares contract was a poisoned pill. It's almost untradeable at this point. And I am skeptical that Matthews resigns two years from now when he is a free agent. So the only two options that remain are 1) trade Matthews next summer when he has 1 year left on his contract or 2) trade him this summer when you can get more back in a trade because he has two years left.

So why extend the inevitable? Better to begin the rebuild now and start from scratch.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Kakko, Kaapo
  2. Lafrenière, Alexis
  3. 2023 1st round pick (NYR)
  4. 2024 1st round pick (NYR)
2.
3.
TOR
  1. Murray, Matt
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (TBL)
OTT
  1. Mrázek, Petr
Additional Details:
Bad contract for bad contract. Since Murray's contract is more and longer, the Sens throw in a pick. And for the Leafs, maybe Murray rebuilds his career on a new team. He is a Stanley Cup winning goalie, after all.
4.
TOR
  1. 2022 2nd round pick (CGY)
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (CGY)
CGY
  1. Muzzin, Jake
Additional Details:
Reunite Muzzin with Sutter. He will fit in well in Calgary's defensive system.
5.
TOR
  1. Foote, Nolan
  2. 2022 1st round pick (NJD)

I am higher on Lafreniere & Kakko than most but AM gotta go for more than that. It’s basically 4 low 1sts, not a single roster player. Talk about lowballing for the greatest player of all time!

Putting aside the boring, incorrect analysis. Thrse trades are all horrid for the leafs.
When you rebuild you get good value for elite players, not that. Awful returns

I've seen some ridiculous posts here, but TOR paying to acquire a worse contract than the one they are offloading is a new one.

The rest are just as crazy.

Edit: Read it wrong, thought TOR was sending the 2nd pick to OTT. Still not happening.

I think Matthews will accept a trade to only a few teams, LA and NY being the top two destinations. I guess you can trade him for Turcotte and Byfield plus picks.

But Kakko and Lafreniere still have a lot of potential. They went 1st and 2nd overall.

rangers could not take 11.6 million in cap with nothing going the other way. trouba and kreider have ncm mika will have one on july 1st. it would be similar to toronto trying to move tavares just a little easier since the cap isn't as high.

Ottawa is not spending a 2nd to swap Murray for Mrazek.

Try again.

What is Toronto paying to acquire Murray? I think you read the trade wrong.

Ottawa saves money, which is a high priority for the franchise in any trade.

Lol what?

"Built from the net out"

proceeds to severely downgrade in net, change nothing on D, and move our three best forwards.

Nice

Except for the trade to acquire Matt Murray in the first place.

And plenty of others.

Ottawa declines.

Try again.

You address goaltending and defence in free agency. You trade the star forwards for future star forwards and younger players like Lafreniere, Kakko, the 2nd overall pick.

Because having Auston Matthews and his huge Cap hit on your Roster leads to Playoff success.

Rangers Cap situation is already about to get iffy. This wouldn't help matters.

Matthews has never been the problem on the Leafs.

The Rangers have a Hart nominated goalie. Add a Hart nominated forward and the Rangers will be a powerhouse.

I don't hate the thinking behind the Murray/Mrazek trade, the Sens get out of that contract and the Leafs get a goalie that could potentially give them some really good games when he's healthy, and if he ends up on LTIR, then they don't have to worry about his cap hit. Makes enough sense, but at that point, the Sens can just wait until he almost inevitably has to go on LTIR and not need to pay their 2nd to get rid of him. Plus Mrazek just doesn't do the Sens any favours, the whole point is that they have a logjam in the crease. Sens could just go and trade Murray and a 2nd for future considerations to Arizona instead and not need to take on Mrazek. It's a creative idea though, I like the thinking, just don't think it makes enough sense for the Sens and it's frankly probably too high of a risk for the Leafs in their cap situation too.

Matthews for 2 busts and some late rounders is not at all worth it. You didn't address goaltending or defence in this post despite stressing its importance (made it worse). Matthews, Marner, Nylander are like 25, they are young stars with lots of time left on the clock. Odds are you're not gonna find another Auston Matthews via the draft.

They make too much money.

I know Matthews and Marner are top 5 players in the game, and strong 2 way forwards who are only getting better, but having three players making over 11 million a year in a tight cap league is ridiculous. It's killing this team. And they have proven not to be difference makers when it counts, in elimination games.

If the Leafs can trade the Tavares contract then that's the obvious choice but no team wants him at that number so that leaves Matthews and Marner.

they're 24, give them time. Many greats have taken time to win. Dubas has done an exceptional job at finding great value contracts for depth contributors, they're finding a way to fill out the team with these deals. And even if you think this, you'd trade one (ie. Marner, which I would disagree with doing), not both.
