Trades
1.
DET
  1. Mangiapane, Andrew [RFA Rights]
  2. Monahan, Sean
  3. Välimäki, Juuso
Additional Details:
Largely a money move for Calgary. Dump Monahan, get a roughly as good albeit slightly older and rental player back in Bertuzzi over Magiapagne. Mang likely looking to command big money and with Gaudreau and Tkachuk in need of big contracts, they may not have the cap space for Mang going forward. While Bertuzzi is likely a rental, or maybe they can keep him with Lucic coming off the books in a year, they get a potential long term asset in Zadina. Zadina is a very solid player, just hasn’t had a fit so far in Detroit. He gets a fresh start here in Calgary (and the same goes for Valimaki coming to Detroit)
CGY
  1. Bertuzzi, Tyler ($2,375,000 retained)
  2. Zadina, Filip [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
This is the frame of a deal. Picks can be added to either side to even value, so don’t imagine this as the exact trade. This is just the NHL caliber pieces being moved
2.
DET
  1. Foligno, Nick
  2. Grzelcyk, Matt
Additional Details:
Very solid Top 4 d man who struggled heavily in playoffs, and with Lindholm likely to hold the top 4 spot and Rielly a good but cheaper option for 2LD, Gryz might be on his way out of Boston. He would make an amazing partner for Seider to give Seider some actual support for a d partner, a great buy low option. Here Detroit gives up Monahan half retained, a bounce back candidate and with the retained salary could be a solid piece to pick up (an early 4th is traded to another team to take on another 50% of salary so he only costs about 1.6 mil to Boston). Boston also gets a half solid 6/7 d man in Walman who will sign for cheap. They get a mid-late second as a solid bit of value, and they also manage to dump the Foligno contract, who is then bought out by Detroit and then he signs a league min (or close to it) contract again with Boston so they save money here as well
BOS
  1. Monahan, Sean ($3,187,500 retained)
  2. Walman, Jake [RFA Rights]
  3. 2022 4th round pick (DET)
  4. 2023 2nd round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Another largely money based move for Boston. Picks could be edited a bit but I think this makes sense for both sides considering the money movement and Boston running out of room for Gryz
3.
DET
  1. 2022 1st round pick (PHI)
  2. 2022 5th round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
Just an added bonus here. Doesn’t need to happen, I just would love to see Detroit trade up to pick 5 or so and select Matthew Savoie. He would be either their 1C of the future or be close second behind Larkin. Either way, an elite 1/2 punch down the middle formed
PHI
  1. 2022 1st round pick (DET)
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Not sure what value would be but moving up from 8 to 5 might only take an early 2nd, maybe less (which is why I have the depth pick coming back)

Grz's playoff struggles were in large part due to playing with a dislocated shoulder

I think Cgy would have to take that given the cap benefit (bertuzzi is a good player), I think Detroit swaps out valimaki bc with his draft position he definitely has more value than he should and i think det can get a better ovr prospect with cgy accepting if they choose some other options

Grz and mcavoy was one of the best pairings in the NHL over the last 2 seasons. Boston should not be quick to trade him. Lindholm was very good with Charlie as well but I think he'd be a great player to compliment Carlo (I wish boston tried it). You can have Reilly and Clifton play pair 3. Forbort should be the obv out but too many boston fans like him bc of his frame and he blocks some shots (which isn’t always a good thing contrary to the general public opinion). The other argument i see a lot on forbort is that he is a great pk defenseman, yes that is true but he actually ranked fourth in pk war added on boston despite being in the top 10 percent of the league (mcavoy, carlo and clifton ranked higher). With all the defenseman this high I think it could be system thing in boston. Forbort isn’t a bad player but he should be the one they try to move but fans can look past his physical frame.

Boston deal.is a non starter. Giving to.much for a guy you stated is probably on his way out. Plus Foligno is bad

It’s assuming the solution gets solved one way or another, forgot to mention!

Would still rather have Mangiapane and just move Monahan only. Calgary's cap situation is very overblown

Gryz is quietly a really really good d man. He would compliment Seider perfectly tbh. This is basically a 2nd and 4th and just money for a guy who would do a lot for Seider and his play/development/morale

It is probably, but it depends on how much Tkachuk and Gaudreau push for. Doing this move maybe hurts their long term (especially if Zadina doesn’t become a stud that’s not the main part of the deal) but it frees up the cap to not only resign JG and MT, but also add another rental piece on top which would absolutely set them as 2nd best in the west

Yeah that’s largely the cause of it, but if Boston wants to move Gryz I think Detroit should 100% capitalize on it

Neither should realistically get above 9.5Mx8 (76M) IMO. They may get a bit more but not much. The thing with Mangiapane is he is such a clutch player, he's the kind of guy who is great for coming up big at important moments (similar to what Binnington is doing for St. Louis right now). That mental drive just doesn't grow on trees

Valimaki is really not based on draft position at this point. He still has immense potential and has shown lots of flashes of what he can do. He has some things he still needs to work on like gap control but overall his is very well rounded and definitely top 4 potential. The main reason he isn't playing on the Flames right now is because Kylington went out last summer and reinvented himself to prove he wasn't a bust. That and Zadorov was acquired.

I can assure you none of this will happen. Calgary isn't trading Mangiapane and Detroit isn't giving up that much so Boston doesn't have give up anything worth while to get Monahan. This is whole thing is nonsensical.

Carlo, McAvoy & Clifton are all RHD. Forbort is a LHD. Clifton also didn't have near the PK TOI that the other 3 did and typically would draw the 2nd PP unit and/or the end of the PP's. I honestly put little stock in a "WAR" metric and certainly don't use it as an end all be all. If Boston traded Forbort they're top LD PK guy probably becomes Lindholm or (if not traded) Mike Reilly. I'm find with Lindholm on the PK, but I don't need him logging 3+ minutes a night on the PK, 18+ minutes at ES and then 2+ minutes on the PP. Can Lindholm play 23+ a night? sure, but do it for 82 games and its going to wear guys down and they'll be cooked by the playoffs.

I don't think the Bruins will move Grz. He's a local kid with ties to the organization. Plus his value is down after his playoff performance and an injury that could have him out to begin 2022-23.

With that said, swap Grz for Mike Reilly and Walman for Gustav Lindstrom and I would make that deal 10 times out of 10.

Saying Gryz is “nothing worthwhile” is a complete insult to his play. He has been one of the best d men in the league the last couple of years in terms of controlling possession and chances for/against. Him and McAvoy were truly dominant together, and considering a lot of similarities between McAvoy and Seider, he would be a perfect partner imo for Seider, until Edvinsson is ready at least. Monahan has been a healthy scratch at times this year, he’s not the star he once was. He’s due for rebound yes, but his value isn’t too high.
As for Mangiapagne, he might need to be moved for cap reasons. It depends on what Tkachuk and Gaudreau get, but if they both get 10 mil or so then the cap will be very tight. Bertuzzi is an equivalent player more or less for the 3rd of the price next year, so he’ll be a good rental replacement

But once you get to that point the value isn’t there for Detroit. The value here for Gryz combined with them potentially moving him and money saved, I think Boston takes this. Monahan can be a top 6 C for them here, but with all the cap saved they could maybe go into FA/Trade and acquire a bonafide star C more easily
