You are right on that. Marchand is 34, you don't trade 26 year old point a game players for guys whos best hockey was played years ago.

Hahhahahaha. Cmon buddy. You’re better than this. FYI - Marchand’s best season was 20-21.

Lol, thanks for letting everyone know you don’t follow hockey.

BTW, Marchand had the same 80 point total that Nylander did this year…in 11 less games. He’s been over a point a game the last 6 years. 👍🏻

And he'll probably finish top 10 in the Selke voting again laugh

It really is a shame to see the quality of insightful posters continue to go down as CF has become more popular. 90% of the crap you read on here is like the hot takes of the comment section on social media.

Doesn't matter, he's 34. Funny how he doesn't age but according to everyone on this site JT is now a 3rd liner.

Yup, but for how long? He's 34, his best hockey is in the past not in the future.

Nobody says that, just the whiny Leafs portion of the fanbase complaining how nobody else overvalues Leafs like they do. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hell Leafs fans were complaining that he should be removed from center and moved to LW. Lol.

Well, that’s because we all have eyes and can see their relative levels of play.

Well of course, and that’s why this deal isn’t an absurd price tag.

Over the past 6 seasons Marchand is:
4th in points behind Kane, Draisaitl, and McDavid.
4th in points per game behind Draisaitl, Kucherov, and McDavid.
2nd in +/- behind Bergeron
6th in goals…one could just go on and on and on.

If his best hockey was in front of him, the price tag would be preposterous.

No idiots are saying that. Don't lump all leaf fans into the Mr Dinkee camp

It doesn't matter what he's done. He's 34, he won't continue to do it. Making it a bad idea to spend a major asset (a 26 year old point a game player is a major asset) for someone who's best hockey is in the past.

If he does 80% of it, he’s triple the player nylander is.

The decline is coming and who knows how quickly it hits. At his size, even losing a half step is a major issue

Can you just be honest with yourself for a second?

Of course swapping marchand for nylander would be awesome for the leafs.

Maybe, for a season. Or he declines immediately and Nylander continues to get better. A guy 8 years older is highly unlikely to be anything but worse than he has been. A 26 year old can still get a lot better. This isn't a new concept. Get over your bias bud.

Continue to get better? At 26? That would be far more rare than marchand continuing along at the same pace for another couple seasons. Developmental curves for forwards normally peak at 25 tops. Oddly enough, marchand is a pretty good outlier to this.

The biggest issue: does nylander bring it every night? That’s the biggest problem I see with the leafs. They’ve got guys that aren’t there every night. Don’t think you’ll see that problem with marchand.

How old was Marchand in his best year? Funny how reality shifts to suit your bias.

Did you not read my full post? I mentioned Marchand is an outlier specifically.

I also never said it doesn’t happen, just that it’s very rare

The likelihood that Marchand declines rapidly is there. The chance that Nylander continues to put all his game together is high as well. A 90 point campaign from Nylander is a distinct possibility and him being a point a game player for several season is high. Marchand is not going to get better. He's going to be worse every year until he retires. How much worse is the question and I just wouldn't take the risk.
