Guerin is going to give Fiala away

Created by: TanSor
Team: 2022-23 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: May 20, 2022
Published: May 20, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Guerin was on KFAN (local sports radio) the other day and defended Dumba adamantly to the detriment of Fiala when he was probed with the idea of keeping Fiala instead of Dumba. I have a feeling he's not going to ask for much and is going to give him away for pennies. Whoever ends up with him, they're getting one hell of a player.

If you listen to the interview OP referred to, Guerin doesn't give a single solitary **** about explaining anything to the fans. He's very, very arrogant.

He's no different than Darryl Sutter is with the media in Calgary and everyone loves him.

Zacha would be stuck on our 4th line, so he wouldn't have much value here. Boqvist is an OK piece, but I don't think he'll be much more than a career 3rd liner. The 2nd is a 2nd. I dunno, just not something I'm all that excited about for a 25 year old fresh off an 85 point season.

Boqvist has some upside left to him. He is a very fast and creative center who never really got a chance in an offensive role here. He could be a sneaky good add at a low price. Here he is taking Pietrangelo for a walk:

Zetterlund is a bit of a late bloomer. He arrived to camp a good 20-25 lbs heavier (220 lbs) this year and became a rock on his skates. Put up 52 pts in 58 games in AHL (plus 8 pts in 5 playoff games) and 8 pts in 11 NHL games in April/May. I imagine he is in line for bigger role next year as our GM is looking for “heavier skill”. Here he is crushing a 580 lb deadlift

And a Zetterlund snipe

Very much the Lou Lamoriello school (who was the GM who drafted him)

I'd make that trade in a heartbeat.

I see Rasmussen as a decent 2nd line center. Do I have him targeted correctly?

Ras is developing into a shutdown 3C in my opinion. Minny could get more for Fiala. I prefer Ras at W where he can better utilize his size. I don't think he'll ever be a 2C.

Guerin sounds a lot like former Columbus GM Doug McLean and a bit like Bobby Clarke. It sounds like he's defending Dumba but is also trying to jack his price up to trade him. It sounds like he's disappointed in Fiala's playoff performance. I wonder if Billy G would be saying these things if Fiala were an American player and not a Swiss player. Let's blame the Euro guy for the team failing.

Wow. That was unexpected. Sounds like he leaning towards keeping Dumba over Fiala.

@TanSor Take a deep breath. Step back from the ledge. You've been lurking on HFBoards again haven't you? It was a 1-off presser that means nothing.

Relax, whatever happens with Fiala happens. Nothing you can do about it.

Depends on the team, I guess, and who is ahead of him. He is a guy that could be put at 3LW and moved to 2C if needed. He is not going to be a checking line center, but could be middle-six center if one is needed.

Zacha would be the other option. He wants to play center, but provides a lot more offense from the wing (~0.7ppg) than he does at center (~0.4ppg). His defense is adequate. But he has helped bridge the gap at center in top-6 at times as both Nico and Jack have had injuries over last couple of years.

tears of joy you're right. Still though, I just don't trust Guerin to maximize Fiala's value

GMBG was never going to be able to maximize Fiala's value. It's a trade that is going to be "lost" simply because MN is giving up the better player. Any Fiala trade will be about minimizing the loss taken.

Fiala holds almost all the cards and can tank his trade value just by saying he's not signing anywhere long term and wants to be a UFA next season. The biggest loss GMBG could take on Fiala would be to let him walk as a FA after declining to pay the arbitration amount.

Yeah, alot more than the usual "increase a guy's trade value" talk.

Also in the days before the post season when asked about how good Fiala has been and if the Wild need to keep him, GMBG said, "You're only as good as your last game." Clearly meaning the playoffs and then Fiala is terrible in the playoffs.

Jesus Christ. I've been beating the "he's gonna return less than people think" drum but this...this is insane. He's publicly tanking his value.

He had 3 assists. All of them came on 3 out of the last 4 goals MN scored in the Playoffs.

He had some awful luck with fluky high sticking penalties. A double minor for the guy lifting Fiala's stink into his own face. A double minor for catching the one guy on the ice without a visor while trying to get his stick unpinned from the boards. A useless matching roughing penalty because the refs had lost control of the game and were trying to get it back.

Fiala was by no means great in the Playoffs, but he wasn't as awful as people are making him out to be either.

I'd be okay if it really was the trees for those 6 games. What is being remember is the shiny rock next to the tree, not the trees themselves.
