Why does Arizona retain that much money for 3 years? Maybe switch the retention to Sanheim and it makes more sense

There is a simple reason why & it’s Arizona will not be able to contend for at least 3 years till their rookies either grow into stars or they sign UFA’s they have nothing else to spend their cap space on & will struggle to hit the cap ceiling next year & onward mainly cause i don’t see people saying they’ll play in an arena that holds less people than the London Knights (it’s why they took Ritchie) though Leafs would pay a heftier price for those 3 years compared to one year probably a 2nd or even a 1st

There are much better ways of reaching the cap floor than using one of their 2 remaining retention slots for the next 3 seasons and only getting a 2nd in return.

They could just take the Weber and seabrook contracts from Montreal and tampa and then reaching the floor is easy

Rather get an asset probably a 1st than a player that will just rot on LTIR then again i did mean to put it on Sanheim but mobile CF is really easy to mess up

In your trade you only did a 2nd.

That’s way not enough for that level retention.

Arizona getting an insured contract to sit on LTIR that’s cost them almost nothing in real cash but takes up 6-7 million in cap space is exactly what they need
