The offersheet itself: I really, really liked it. Essentially trading a late first (because Carolina knew they would contend this year) and third for a then 20 year old player, with 5 years of team control who could already play top-9 minutes is a really good deal. The cap hit for this season didn't really matter because of Jake Gardiner's 4.1MM cap being on LTIR all season, and it was widely known that a lower cap extension was in place, so I really consider it like a trade, and if you can get a player of Kotkaniemi's calibre and potential around pick 24-32, you take that every time

Kotkaniemi as a player: I think it's still too early to make judgments on a 21 year old who was always believed to be a project centre since he was drafted. He appears to have a lot of potential because he's big and has a lot of hockey sense. If his legs catch up to his brain, he could be a legit 1C in my opinion. However, just as of this season, he looked really good when playing in the top-6 when everyone was out with COVID, and when he is put with skilled players that can convert chances he thrives.

just think there isnt enough parity in the league right now. 50% of the league is already making the playoffs wouldnt make it more. think thats how you end up with montreal (had no business being a playoff team last year) making the stanley cup.
