Question is a little more for the Leaf crowd but does anyone else think the Leafs rushed into resigning Morgan? Hindsight what is is, but with or without Giordano, I’ve always kind of struggled if Rielly is a number 1 LD. Love the offence he create, great at moving the puck with speed but can’t defend against the rush, and can make some poor decisions without the puck.

Feels like they are making Sandin’s ascension to a more prominent role even harder with Rielly Muzzin and now Gio ahead of him. They could move him to his offside but he did not look comfortable at all in the short stint they tried him there this season.

I get the narrative they couldn’t let Morgan walk for nothing but you’ve got Gaudreau/Forsberg (some big names) also as FA, it happens.

Long winded way of saying I think they did, should have let this season play out, see where you stand, they look at a new deal or let him walk.

Thoughts?

I get what you're saying, but with how favorable that deal is, it was a no-brainer. Losing him for nothing would've been disastrous and replacing him would be a tall order; I love Sandin, but he's not there yet and guys of that caliber aren't exactly just up for grabs.

I'm not too concerned about having too many good players at the moment, tbh.

Barkov and Huberdeau.

Barkov is in 9th NHL season, has 6 playoff goals.

Huberdeau is in his 10th NHL season has 5 playoff goals.

But nobody will ever talk about blowing up FLA

if they get swept by tampa i think you'll see talk about changes.

florida has been making progress. they went from 3 years out of the playoffs to 2 first rounds exit to what looks like a 2nd round exit.

they should be better tho.

Not who you asked, but I would be surprised if they kept Vitek over Sammy. Sammy is younger and has higher upside. I think vitek will sign a cheap deal and get a better trade return

Rielly’s your best defensemen, you can’t afford to let him go, he’s still a good top pair D. If you want to go for it Rielly, Muzzin, Gio and Sandin is a good left side ( Muzzin could be dealt to clear cap space too )

It’s only the 1st, France was beating the Swiss 2-0 after 1 and lost 5-2, game not even close to done

What do you think now? Defense breakdowns and undiscipline. Claude Julien's style of hockey

Haha
Allen will be the hottest goalie on the market, he'll be cheap, and can play 40 games
He'll cost at least a couple 2nds

Lol, Allen at 50% is at best worth a 2nd, he’s good, but he’s a 1B, we and depending on if Price is healthy, I’d rather capitalize on Allen’s value then trade Monty

Maybe he is, but I woudlnt trade him unless we get a couple 2nds back
Why? Monty is not gonna turn into anything

If Price is healthy, would you rather Price, Monty and the assets got for Allen or Price + 1 year of Allen? I think almost everyone would pick Price, Monty + assets got for Allen

Price isn't going to be healthy, we need a starter and it's clear Monty isn't that. I'll trust Hughes with what we do with Allen, but unless we can get a half decent guy in FA I'm keeping Allen. He wants to be here and provides SC experience, why not keep him?

Seems to me the better move would've been to let him walk.
I'm lower on Rielly than most admittedly but I think that's pretty much 7.5m wasted, especially for the perennially cap strapped Leafs.
Replacing Rielly with Nichushkin for next years lineup would make the roster a lot better.
I'd bet Sandin's gonna be the better player between the two in the not too distant future anyway (please offersheet him Fitzy I'm begging you)

I think someone beat me to it, but I’m on the Samsonov train if they can only keep one. Better upside and he’s got a reasonable QO. Just needs better defense around him.
