Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 23, 2022
Published: May 23, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I've seen Leafs fans make Muzzin for Roy trades and I think it makes absolutely 0 sense from LA's perspective. So I ask, would Nylander convince LA to give up Roy++ and how much would they add if they do. They are turning out to be very strong at RD now and Leafs would love someone llike Roy. Willy would absolutely shine in LA as he wouldn't have the same shadow that he had to live in because of the Leafs stars.

Matt Roy is not available until Brock Faber makes the jump to the NHL and gets a season under his belt. The Kings have no one on the roster to fill his role if Doughty goes down with an injury again. Roy was LA's #1 defenseman for much of the season.

So no, not even for Nylander.

Not smart. Roy being worth Nylander when Doughty, Clarke, Spence, Grans, Walker, Durzi, and Faber are needing ice time doesn't make that job easier.

Kings should take this and run something like this for the D pairs until the young defenseman are ready. Capitalize on the situation.

Anderson-Doughty
Bjornfot-Durzi
Edler-Walker
Spence

3/4 of the RHD that you list are defensive liabilities. What happens when an aging Doughty goes down with an injury again and misses significant time? Faber is his eventual replacement, but he's still a season or two away from making the jump to the NHL.

No, the Kings won't trade Roy.

I understand that. Just feel the Kings would benefit taking advantage of their depth at RHD and adding a difference maker in their top 6. Which I believe, is one of the only things you guys are missing.

I'm sure they will. They will move one or two of Durzi, Spence, Walker, or Grans. Roy, Faber, and Clarke aren't available.

Probably not. Grans for Johnson seems to be the agreed upon trade these days.

I could live with that. Rather sign Johnson but we shall see.

Kings could stand to solidify their LHD, but the Kings would be bringing in Johnson to provide a bit of extra incentive for Faber to sign in LA, which is what they really want.

Why wouldn't he sign? How does Johnson help? College teammate?

Faber's sister Paige has a cognitive disability, and the two of them are very close. There is speculation that he will run out the clock on his signing rights with the Kings in order to become a UFA and sign with the Wild so he can stay close to home.

Both Johnson and Faber chose to forego NHL contracts this year in order to return to Minnesota next season. Johnson is entering his Senior year, Faber his Junior year. If LA acquires Johnson's rights and Minnesota can snag a Frozen Four championship next season, the hope is that the pair will sign their contracts in LA together.

Nylander fills a hole at RW for two years, but trading Roy for him opens up another*, so this would be just playing a game of whack-a-mole. Our experience this year with the rash of injuries to defensemen (both sides) argues strongly against trading Roy unless it's in the sort of deal that no sane GM would make.

* The fact that we have plenty of NHL-quality RDs on next season's roster doesn't mean that we have a replacement for Roy in particular.

Can it happen if LA goes to free agency and signs someone like Manson?

I don't think so. Right now, we have everything planned out for the right side of our defense (see @tkecanuck341's first two comments). Moving Roy just creates complications in an area we think we have settled for the future, as long as Faber and Clarke turn out (and even then, we might get by with one of Durzi or Spence).

Some of the people in here are WAY over thinking this. LA needs scoring, period. Their Defense held it together last year without Doughty (Their best RHD). I know Roy was one of their best defensive Dman last year but if you can trade him straight up for Nylander's offensive talents you have to. They have too many RHD roster players and need to move at least 2 of them in the next couple years. I don't think TOR would ever do this trade though.

Toronto would need something added as willy was a ppg player even while playing on the 3rd line at times.

Building a competitive team requires moving forward every season. Adding Nylander while subtracting Roy is taking a step forward offensively while taking a step back defensively, which is just a lateral move, and if you think that offense outperforms defense, you haven't noticed how Nylander's own team disproves that theory. Meanwhile, you've overlooked the fact that Nylander's contract expires in two more seasons -- exactly when we'll be true consistent Stanley Cup contenders.

Would Toronto take Iaffalo in the deal also? Iafallo, Roy, and a pick/prospect like Madden.

I like Iaffalo's style, I think that would be close to fair value.

You guys keep targeting the Kings untradeable players. Iafallo is one of the guys even less likely to be moved than Roy. McLellan went as far as to call him a "star player."

There's a lot of scoring help available in the league. It doesn't have to come from the Leafs. If the asking price for Nylander includes Roy and/or Iafallo, then a deal isn't going to get done.

You like Iafallo? He sucked pretty bad since January.

He didn't score very much since January. There's a big difference between not scoring and sucking. Iafallo isn't going anywhere.

Nearly every forward on the team mentioned in their exit interviews how much they love playing with Iafallo on their line and how he makes everyone else better. He's signed to an incredibly team-friendly $4M AAV contract for the next 3 years. The Kings would trade Kempe before they traded Iafallo.

I respect your opinion but I do disagree. I think he sucked badly. Kempe is a top six player and Iafallo is not. For a team that has a lot of two way forwards and needs goal scoring guys like Kempe and Nylander are better.
But I do agree he isnt going anywhere. The coach loves him.

I think Iafallo is just as important to this team as Doughty and Kopitar. It's also imperative to have quality players on team-friendly contracts. If Kempe signs a 3 year, $4M AAV contract, then I might change my mind on who is more important, but for now, it's Iafallo.

I think Iafallo will be an important factor on Byfield's breakout timeline. I think we see Iafallo-Byfield-Grundstrom next season, and that line will put up 40+ goals.
