I bet you already knew this trade was coming when you clicked on this post. It seems like the consensus is that it’ll cost a 2nd to offload Mrazek. Leafs won’t trade a 1st to get rid of him and whoever takes on his contract will want more than a 3rd. A 2nd feels like fair value for both sides.

    1. 2024 3rd round pick (DAL)
    Additional Details:
If the Stars lose Klingberg they are gonna need another RD. Holl is very overhated in Toronto and would be a solid 4th/5th defensemen. I know he isn’t offensive at all like Klingberg, but at a affordable 2 million dollar cap hit they could still sign another offensive dman in FA while getting another solid D in Holl. In terms of return, Holl should be able to fetch a 3rd but if not then you could settle with a 4th or 5th.

    TOR
I think the Leafs will really try to move Muzzin but won’t be able to. Muzzin’s value is a massive question mark imo. Some people think he still has value and some people think he doesn’t. He also has a NTC which complicates making a trade even further. You can’t just attach a pick to him and send him on the next flight to Arizona. I just decided to keep him for this season and then I would just reconsider moving him next summer.

        TOR
        1. 2022 2nd round pick (NSH)
        Additional Details:
Leafs should be able to get at least a 2nd for Kerfoot imo. A mid 2nd for a 50 point player in Kerfoot is worth it for Seattle. They could even flip him 50% retained at the deadline for more assets than just a 2nd. It would be a great use of asset management for them. They’re practically trading Lauzon for Kerfoot, while Leafs shed cap and get a decent pick.

        TOR
        1. Kubalik, Dominik [RFA Rights]
        Additional Details:
Apparently it’s most likely that Chicago won’t qualify Kubalik and will just let him walk. I think he’d be a good value player for Toronto and he might take a one year “prove it deal” and then leave after to get paid. He might want more than 2.5 but maybe after a down year, and a chance to play in the top 6, maybe he’d accept.

As far as Kubalik, CHI will tender an offer, (especially since its so cheap), so even if he does find his way to TOR, it wont be free.

And your signings/re-signings are pretty good, but I just dont see a team better than 21-22. Its basically the same team, with some of the same issues:

Age: In 21-22 Toronto was the 10th oldest team in the league, in the playoffs/end of season they got older with clifford/giordano. Still have dependency on Spezza, Muzzin, Simmonds, Clifford.
Unreliable commodities: Kase surpassed expectations last season by actually playing more than a few dozen games, but hes a concern every game. The bottom 6 dont have tons of firepower. Kallgren is not a good backup (3.31 GAA and .888 save %). Very unlikely that robertson/abrueze/kubalik replace Kerfoot/Spezza/Mikheyev in production or two way play.

Im not calling for an overhaul, but this is really the 21-22 team without Mikheyev, Kerfoot, Holl with really just the addition of Kubalik and (hopefully) the arrival of Robertson/Abrueuze.

This season's team was a coin flip away from the eastern conference final. I would say running it back is a wise plan. I think Mikheyev is likely gone but his 2 empty net goals and nothing else in 7 games may hurt his contract a bit so maybe he is still affordable. I think Kase is likely gone. His health is is just too unpredictable and I think you can find a better 4th liner who hits or kills penalties.

Calling the team old is rich though. All the heavy lifters, beyond JT (who is still a great player) are under 30. I guess you can say Brodie is pretty major as well. Simmonds, Spezza and Gio lift the average but have proven to be capable in their roles still.

CHI will probably offer Kubalik a contract but it most likely won't be a qualifying offer. So it's up to him if he wants to take a prove it deal with CHI or see how free agency plays out.
