Possible 2022-23

Created by: ImBoredAtWork
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 24, 2022
Published: May 24, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1) Mrazek - Assuming a team currently without a defined #1 signed would want to take him for a better draft pick (i.e. Arizona or Buffalo are the 2 most commonly suggested).

2) Kerfoot - Only selected Pittsburgh in the event that they don't sign Malkin, could use another winger that can shift to centre. Leafs and Pens always seem to be common trade partners.

3) Muzzin/Robertson - Has probably been suggested too many times over, but seems like the only place Muzzin would leave (w/ NTC). Not sure how defined the LD is for the Kings next year, so this may not fit their timeline. They have enough good wingers, but I figured this is similar to Trevor Moore - gets a Cali native home and possibly more play time.

4) Campbell - Gives up the $5M x 3 that is used as his main comparison for an extra year.

5) Kadri - Could also be any other C that you think would sign for $6-$6.5M range, this is more hopeful than accurate.

6) Sandin/Liljegren - Considering Matthews/Nylander are up in 2 years, my guess is that these guys sign a 1 year deal in order to sign a much longer deal next year so that Leafs don't have to re-sign all 4 of these guys in 2024.

7) Holtby - Just another suggestion since everyone's favourite, Wedgewood, is going to be pursued by a lot of teams or just re-sign in Dallas. Probably better options still out there.

8) Remaining RFAs/UFAs - No increase to slight increases for everyone, but realistically you could reallocate these anyway you'd prefer. Not a fan of a 7th D making $2M, but I'm guessing he stays given they played him heavily in the playoffs.

- Muzzin would have to waive to us (he won’t)
- The Kings would have to have no other option at LD (they do, Edler put up better metrics last season over Muzzin)
- The Kings would need to be out on their other trade partners (they aren’t)

Buffalo would ask for more than a mere 3rd to eat Mrazek's contract

Giving away a close to ready ELC player like Robertson doesn't do them any favors, I think Dubas can get a bit more out of Kerfoot (not a big issue). I like the amount of changes, seems like something that could happen if Kadri is willing to sign in Toronto (would be nice if he took the Nugent-Hopkins/Rust deal) giving them some more cap for the future.

Pens decline, we would rather use that 3.5 million to resign rakell

Mrazek is not in contention for the #1 job, in the NHL at least, Arizona and Buffalo have a ton of cap space, so for some reaon TML fans think they owe it to them to take Mrazek

It's not about owing anyone anything, it's within the realm of possibility because they need to dress players and reach the cap floor, and even Toronto can buy him out but they are already cap crunching, so the term isn't really an issue for Buf/Arz (Petr Mrázek: $1,033,333 $833,333 $1,433,333 $1,433,333). Arz already has a goalie tandem perfect for tanking, so they might do the trade and buy him out if the sweetener is worth it to them. Buf would perhaps play him, look at the tandem they had last year, I don't think they would want to buy him out though because they will probably want to start exiting the rebuild stage in the next 2 years

Would have room for both, in the scenario he mentioned.

Sabres already have a backup goalie spot all but filled up in UPL they need a starter. Mrazek isn’t what they are looking for.

Los Angeles isn't interested in this effort to shed significant cap.

Absolutely no interest in installing Jake Muzzin 2.0 even if he would waive his NTC, plus we could re-sign Alex Edler for less than Jake's cap hit, and we would probably get the same results without having to expend assets to re-acquire Muzz. Will you Toronto guys please stop doing this? It's like the Montreal guys with their silly Jeff-Petry-to-Detroit trades.

Yeah that's fair, I should have phrased it more along the lines of "they need at least 1 nhl ready goalie under contract next year and could be priced out of the goalie FA market". A lot of if's, but the most likely thing would be Buffalo not wanting to help a rival unless they got a 1st or something out of it.

The Robertson inclusion was mainly for sending Muzzin away without giving up even more picks (although pretty unlikely overall that Muzzin is going anywhere). Realistically, it was more of the fact that Tavares looked a little slower towards the end of the year and another good C would help support him (like the whole Stamkos thing in Tampa that happened a couple years back). Losing Kerfoot is basically the trade-off, but if they can make it work without another bigger name forward then I like him on the team still.

Yup, totally fair - someone else detailed a bunch of points that basically derail any trade. Was just going with a convenient possibility, didn't know how well Edler had been playing (east coast bias of course lol) and figured he was just playing out his contract given he's 36.

So our second line Center is Alex Kerfoot? Yeah no thanks

We would either sign kadri or trochek, or trade for miller. Hextall announced they are still trying to win the cup, and no chance it happens if we have kerfoot at 2C

All good points, basically a lot of if's for it to work. Didn't know the full status of the LD situation - figured Edler was done or close to it so Muzzin almost fits in his spot if he didn't come back. I'm guessing by trade partners, the biggest one would be the Coyotes? Of course that's a way better deal if they could get Chychrun, so yeah definitely wouldn't make sense to even consider this until that's figured out.

Toronto AGMs have been trying to trade Kerfoot singe the day after he arrived. No cap slammed contender wants his $3.5M. You might get a 4th out of a low cap team as his salary is $800K less.

No, he would play as a 3C or on the wing on line 2 or 3
