I like the concept of this, but it only works if Wilson is out the entire season. Since it's a 6-8 month injury, we're not going to be able to fit him under the cap when he comes back. We'd have to move Eller and Hagelin and fill those spots with rookies in the meantime. I also doubt we can swing a Chychrun trade without including one of McMichael or Lapierre. I don't think Samsonov has proven enough to be the main piece in that deal, and they want quality > quantity

This sounds like perfect opportunity for Capitals to use that LITR loophole to their advantage.

Problem is that A) Wilson's slated to return mid-season, so they'd need him to agree to waste probably 3-4 months that he'd be healthy enough to play, and B) players only go on LTIR once the season starts, and teams can only exceed the cap by 10% (8.25M) during the summer. Even if the Caps know Wilson, Backstrom, and Hagelin are gonna start the year on IR, that limit means they can only spend 73.6M on the rest of their roster. Best case scenario they pay someone to take Hagelin, but even with that it still means they're essentially working under a 76.4M hard cap until the season starts.

Edit: I'm wrong.

Can LTIR be used in the off-season?
Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.

Backstorm and Wilson can be placed on LTIR in the offseason, freeing up their cap space -- I feel like this is a common misconception a lot of hockey fans have about how IR works. The problem of having to move hagelin and eller once wilson is ready to come back would still be there though.

Yeah, I looked it up after I posted it and realized I had that wrong, should've gone back and edited that post. I swear I read that LTIR wasn't a thing in the off-season, I wonder if it's from the previous CBA?

I might swap out Alexyev for Lapierre then in that deal. I think Chychrun could be a great long term piece for us. We have a lot of guys who can play center in the system (McM and Protas are the top 2 young C’s that come to mind) and Kuznetsov should be around for a while.
