in a vacuum the value here probably lines up -- if you proposed this trade in NHL22 the computer would probably accept. However, these peices just aren't what the caps really are looking for. Petry does a worse job filling the same role as carlson, and LD is a much bigger hole than RD. Hoffman is a great finisher and PP specialist that does not drive play whatsoever, a much worse version of what ovi is at this point. Allen is probably the guy the caps would actually want the most, but IMO there are better options out there in FA or on the trade market.
Caps needs especially if Backstrom is out are a play-driving 2c, a defensive/2-way top 6 winger, a top4 LD to play with carlson, and a starting goalie. To give up basically two of their 3 premium future assets in one deal and not really address any of these holes wouldn't make sense. I also think that montreal for their part would get a better return to split up all these guys into separate deals, as well as trying to not use up all 3 of their retention slots before the season starts
