Not too sure on the exact value of this deal. I do know that both are worth anywhere from a 2nd to a late first, so I imagine a deal centered around these two players would make sense. One of the sides probably has to add a bit though, idk who though.

Neither Hronek or Lindstrom are better defensemen than Petry, this is insanity. If Detroit rather ice their younger defensemen in hopes of them becoming better it's understandable, but they're not better at the moment than Jeff Petry. You could just say Petry doesn't fit Detroit's timeline or Detroit would rather give that icetime to their young Ds, but Petry being in the pressbox in Detroit is a plain wrong take.

Petry would be in the press box because he doesn't fit their timeline, we would rather play out younger players. Petry to Detroit, especially for Zadina is just dumb. I don't even hate Petry but this trade is just dumb.

Short term yes, long-term no. There's a plenty of contracts to re-sign in the next 2 years with Benn's albatross deal expiring in three. We need to be pretty mindful in where we invest the money.

No different than Detroit. We don't want his money or term.

I'm not questioning that. I'm questioning the idea of placing him to pressbox. That's complete bullsh*t.

Could have just said that in the beginning, instead of arguing that significantly worse defensemen are better than Petry.

Well we have other players that we would prefer to play so yes he would be in the pressbox. That is why Petry to Detroit doesn't work, it's not hard to figure out. We have 3 players that are better suited to play before him in the line up because of multiple reasons.

Lindstrom is a different type of dman, he's way better defensively than Petry. Granted he will never put up alot of points but he's good in his own zone and is good at break out passes.

Also Dallas has 40M in cap space next year, that's alot.

Dallas wont have 40M to spend next year, They've like 17.5M to spend this year and will spend every penny of it. Which means more than likely they will have about 22.5M to spend next summer.

That's just your opinion on the defencemen. If Petry is so good you guys can just keep him. We will keep who we have and be happy without him.

Better suited in terms of being so adamant on their roles that you'd rather suck as a team than get better?

Allllllllrighty then.

You are right they changed up the cap hit stats since I noticed last. Either way doesn't change my position on Petry to Detroit. I was just making that argument got the Dallas fan.

Yeah i totally agree with you, I don't want Petry anywhere near this team. If Yzerman does move Hronek i'd rather just sign John Klingberg if we can get him for $6,500,000 x 7 years which is Krug and Lindholm money.

You can't tell me you would actually make that trade for Detroit? You might as well trade Johnston for OEL or something.

I wouldn't, and I never said the trade is fine.

Only thing I'd claim is that if DET now for some reason got Petry in their roster he'd definitely be in their lineup.

Facts prove it as well, so I guess it's not just a matter of opinion but alright. Habs are more than happy to keep Petry.

Scroll up a bit more and I posted two charts proving it, even in a "down year" from Petry.

Edit: Oops I think I misread. If you're asking about being happy to keep Petry, I think most Habs fans would rather have him over trading him for the sake of it. They only want to trade him if the team can get a solid package as he doesn't really fit the timeline.

You'd sit your 2nd best D in the pressbox every night?

Correction, we'd sit your 2nd best D in the pressbox every night. We've got several guys who are better (and that's considering half our D is going to free agency).

Yeah, no. Remove your Wings glasses & the only guy better right now is Seider.

Wings fans' mob mentality amazes me.

Even though I feel like there's nothing remotely comparable between what you're proposing and what is proposed above, my comment wasn't on the trade itself but on Petry being in the pressbox. He'd be Detroit's 2nd best D by a quite a fair margin.

He would be in Detroits top 4, which isnt hard to do.. What Im trying to explain to you is that the trade is very lopsided for a guy that doesnt fit what Detroit is currently attempting to do. He would be our new Dekeyser / Stall.. Being benched may be extreme, but the young guys are getting time in the lineup, so its not too far off. Overall the trade doesnt benefit Detroit in any way to move forward.

I'm not a fan of Petry to Detroit ideas either as I wouldn't want my non-contending team to trade for a guy beyond the age of its core. I simply dislike when Detroit fans act like Petry is an abomination while in fact he's a Top 2 defenseman on many NHL teams. He's a high caliber defenseman who in no way should be in the same sentence as DeKeyser and Staal. Those two are employed for veteran presence, Petry is employed for still being a very good defender.

IF Detroit landed Petry, I would play him every night, not arguing there. I also would have played Stetcher every night, who was a healthy scratch after returning from injury and showed what he can do in LA. I think most people in Detroit see us getting away from the highly paid older players and sticking with veterans who provide the learning experience to the young players at this point. Like i said before, the part I am most hung up on is the trade itself. I wouldnt let Zadina go for just Petry. I would rather see what happens with a new coach and lose him for nothing if he cant get it together. But the floor/ceiling for Zadina just doesnt match a one for one with Petry. Good player, just not what Detroit would move Zadina for. Schmitt, Martinez, Pettersson are all guys who could fit, carry less term and money, and wouldnt need Zadina in the mix to get.

See that's reasonable. Much moreso than the responses I've gotten so far in this thread.

Ill help explain.. your offer is the same as: Detroit offering you Danny Dekeyser with 2 years at $6.2M for Rem Pitlick... WHAT WOULD DEKEYSER DO FOR MONTREAL? the same as Petry would do in Detroit.

1) Rem Pitlick is nothing special, he had an unstable/high shooting percentage and went back to earth at the end of the season. he’s gonna be a nice third liner for us, nothing all
2) LMFAOOOOO Petry is actually good and so much better than DeKeyser. Yes, Petry was bad in the first half of the year, but so was the whole team. He was really good under MSL both analytically/production-wise and he’s been great analytically/production-wise for years as a Hab. he’s been reported to be worth around a late first from insiders anyway
