And certainly wont be playing in a 5000 seat arena

My guess rn is Matthews probs gets a 13.5mill x 8 year extension with a total of 100mill in signing bonuses

While I don't think Matthews is resigning with the Leafs, and don't know why he would with Arizona.....especially that team.

Bettman has to rank Phoenix just behind the chicago ny la for importance to a American tv deal, only thing I could think of for the money time and effort spent on that market.

I'd be shocked if he's below 15 mil. The only comparable that matters in that contract negotiation is McDavid, and the salary cap will have gone up by roughly 10 mil by then.

The salary cap when McDavid signed was 75mil, and his 12.5mil AAV represented 16.667% of the total cap. Just taking the 85.5mil figure you've chosen, the equivalent contract would be roughly 14.25mil, which frankly would be a bargain. I think if Matthews hits open market he could very reasonably ask for the max deal allowed under the CBA, which is 20% of the salary cap, or a 17.1mil AAV.

imo if he leaves LA is the frontrunner. kopitar’s deal is up that next year, he has the california vibes, they’re on the up, it makes sense.

But signing bonuses are part of the cap,,,,so what you proposed is 25m per year cap hit. And the CBA changed, there are limits to the amount of bonuses are front loading allowed.

Um McDavid's signing bonus is 86 mill for 8 years/ cap hit 12.5mill

His base salary is 1mill-3mill after he gets the bonuses

If you make the base salary of Matthews new deal 750-900k and increase the signing bonus money to be double digits for the entire 8 years it does not equal 25mill cap hit lul

If Matthews was making 15mill a season the bonus money would be in the 95-100mill range and the base salary being around 910k

Now if he was making 13.5 with a base of 750k he would have around 90 mill in total bonus. So math was a tad wrong but not even close to 25mill cap hit lul.

Interesting so you think 17mill.

To me its a wait and see as I think 15mill will be the end price but who knows maybe he does ask for the highest amount possible per the cap rules

Either way the bonus money is gonna be insane

The leafs have 3 players under contract the year matthews hits free agency. Marner, Tavares and Rielly. There's no way Dubas hasnt though about this. Matthews probably gets extended first thing in 2023 offseason.
