Why would they? They're getting good roster players who are still young to fit their team's age group, plus they've got 2 second round assets just in case one of the players doesn't pan out.

Laughton is a 4th liner, Sandheim is a mid to bottom pairing D man. Andrae is an ok prospect. Why give up the second pick (which most likely will be a high end close to NHL ready player) so that a division rival can shed unwanted cap and get a top end prospect?

Sanheim is mid to bottom pairing?????
You can make the argument he's a low-end top pairing guy (and advanced analytics from this year back that opinion)

Don't get me wrong, I like Sandheim, but he didn't have much competition on a terrible defensive team in Philly.

The team being so weak should be a testament to how good he is, if anything
The guy had to play with Ristolainen for much of the season and posted the best season of his career analytically

Sometimes a hard working 4th liner could get you a cup Orr at least a series win ( Perry, Coleman, B.Boyle etc)

Also Konecny has decent value could be a good top 6 addition to be competitive in a series spot.

Yet Sanheim on a terrible defensive team had a +9 rating???? I think you need to go back and review.

My guess is the reason that the author put this trade together was to clear long term dollars so that Philly can sign Gaudreau. Couturier (great player, but seems to be injury prone), and Laughton (3 more years at $3 mil) make that possible. Add in Sanheim who will be looking for a raise after this year, and the Devils are in for at least 15 mil for the next 3+ years. Instead, go after Johnny Hockey at $9 - $10 and have a top young talent at an entry level for the next 3 years............hmmmmmm

Not saying any of the Philly guys are bad, just saying it doesn't make sense for Jersey to help a division rival to cut cap, get younger and clear space for a big UFA addition when they could just do that themselves.
