Yeah looks like a good fit. Devils have to be good at some point right? They probably trade Tatar before johnsson no? Also Cooley would be my guy to draft. Him as a future winger for Hughes and gaudreau..... DAMN. but I get where you are coming from. Don't forget about Luke Hughes as well. Think of what Bouchard is doing in Edmonton right now, but better. This team should be at the top of the east in 2 years imo. Good thread 👍

Don’t sign the best UFA and a top 10 player in the league? That’s a weird thing to not want

Johnny is great but 12 mill oof thats way too much hes worth at least 9-9.5 hes not on the level of Mcdavid or Matthews the only ones that deserve that 12 mill imo.

That’s standard for any player. If he wanted to stay there he would have signed a big extension last season. Instead he went out and had his career year. He’s gone

Matthews deserves 12 million? He basically makes it now but after the postseason I’d say he’s slightly overpaid

I don’t see the Devils pursuing him this off-season. Certainly not at that rate.

Agree with this. He’ll get around $9 million on long-term deal somewhere.

Panarin signed before the pandemic, when we were expecting the cap to be around $98-100m when he exited his contract (now appears ~$86m by then).

There’s no chance he isn’t getting paid 8 figured by a team.

He is a great player but because of where he plays he is hyped endlessly by the media. Remember a month ago when Toronto was seriously saying he’s better than Connor?

If he gets that, good on him. I’ll put my money on 7 x $9 million. Flat cap is whole different world now.

If you look at the big contracts around the league that look bad, this theme would come up a lot.

I think this contract is a really bad idea. Gaudreau has been a smidge below point per game, with two huge outlier seasons. Why one area you getting. Given that he’s turning 29 before he plays another NHL hockey game, I’m guessing this season probably isn’t matched. Given taht he weighs 165 pounds, it could look real bad down the stretch. He’s a very good player, but making him the second highest paid player in the league until he’s 36 is indeed a bad idea.

I still think he winds up in philly.

There’s zero issue with Matthews AAV, which isn’t 12 million. The term was absolutely horrific and one of the biggest mistakes a GM has made this century.

And Chicago paying out a huge contract to Hossa at the same age sure was a bad idea by that logic, but I’d take those 3 cups and happily be where they are now. It’s about winning and Johnny is a big game player. The Flames have very few of them too but he is one. Whoever gets him is going to be lucky and the Devils have some really young skilled players. This team is going to be good very soon but the question is how good? Where would Chicago have been without Hossa? We don’t know but I bet their glad they have those 3 cups and he was a huge part of it.

82.5 million next season. Someone can afford to pay him 8 figures. The NHL never was going to have a 100 million dollar cap right now, a pandemic didn’t change that. They do not have the tv contracts to generate the revenue they dream of having.

This is definately a thing Devils should consider, but 12 mil aav is a lot. You will need to have that pipeline of ELC set up for years.

Not exactly. Very good reason for 5 year contract. Kept AAV much lower, giving them more cap space to compete. Plus, if he becomes a UFA, he can be extended to an 8 year contract until he's in his age 33/34 season, not his 37/38 season.

No for me as a Stars fan. Stars need to fill out with ELCs, wood is just another Gurianov, will score some but eat a good bit of cap space even if just signing a qualifying offer. Rather just keep any more logjamming away so they have to play younger players.

I didn’t say this year. $100 million by the time Panarin exits his contract. So in 2026.

The trajectory that it was on would have likely put the cap just below $100m. Now, it appears the cap will be $86-87m by that year.

No one has signed an eight-figure deal since pandemic hit. It’s unlikely anyone gets one this year.

Ask yourself if he’ll be worth that much money in year 3-7 of that deal. His age 32-36 seasons.

He’s also what, 24 or 25?
