I think sharks decline. Don’t care to retain on Karlsson to take back an older player at the same cap hit after retention at a position they don’t really need. Plus giving up a young goaltender and a 2nd.

Bobrovsky is a goalie, his age does not matter that much. I would prefer to have overpaid, old, servicable goalie over overpaid, old, servicable defender for same cap hit

I really feel like SJ is getting the worse end here by a lot considering where their team is headed. Karlsson is 31. Bobrovsky is 33 and SJ is retaining 1.5m on EK so its basically like they're paying Bobrovsky 11.5M for the next 4 years. Are they really better off now?

I don't think you can really do a 1 vs 1 trade (essentially) for two high priced over the hill stars. One team's benefit has to be getting younger and cheaper but worse while one team has to be getting more older and expensive but much better. Unless its two players who need a change of scenery where no one gets extra picks or prospects or cap saving, just a roll of the dice that the player they're getting performs better than the player they had previously was doing.

I don't see why SJS does that. Not sure how that's attractive for them. Rebuilding or trying to compete.

Retool and adding some youth. Benning is a terrific prospect and crucially a young RHD.

The retention is here because Bobrovsky's contract is one year shorter than Karlsson's, so it evens it out a bit. Cap change for both teams in this "former star" swap is non-existent.

Sharks' benefits are certainly coming at a later point compared to Florida, but I think the additions of Luostarinen and Benning will be beneficial in the long run for them. They're not going to be successful anyway in the next few years so this is one way of gathering some future assets and some that helps them stay relatively competitive in the short term as well.

Is Luostarinen and Benning that big of a deal though? I think i would rather have the cap retention spot available and the probably early 2nd rounder personally. Plus Hill is an easy trade for a pick at the TDL.

Montour is an ok replacement but certainly not going to much for them overall and is not exactly that young core player anymore. He's 28 and being moved around for a reason. Eetu is what, a bottom 6 center/winger I guess. Benning is a coin toss of ever making the NHL. Like what are they really gaining here? If anything not very much and its risk either way so might as well stick with what you know IMHO.

Luostarinen is a developing young two-way C. Benning had almost a PPG season in NCAA at D position. I think both are a good fit there.

Montour is added here to work as a placeholder for Karlsson for a moment. I made a Sharks post involving this trade to see how it works.

The sharks don’t really need a goaltender though. If they move Karlsson they have Burns and Merkely at RD and that’s it. Bob’s numbers were very average on a great team, Reimer had similar numbers on a bad sharks team. Karlsson still produced at a .70 ppg pace prior to being injured, he’s very much still capable of playing. I’d rather keep Karlsson, the younger goaltender and the pick.

After this trade they also have Montour and a very interesting prospect in Benning.

Bob is overpaid as f*ck for his performance but I'd argue the same applies to Karlsson. Also the latter just can't to stay healthy for whole season

Overall I think SJ looks more balanced as a team after such move. Despite the fact they don't really "need" a goalie, per se.

There is a deal out there for karlsson its just not for a Goalie in Fla. Dallas makes the most sense but I do think karlsson would waive for Florida

Dallas has no money for Karlsson. If they can't keep Klingberg, they can't take Karlsson unless Benn or Seguin is involved

Yes that is heart of the deal. It would be Karlsson for Seguin or Benn with retention covering the difference.
