Take out Dermott and add Gardiner it's probably going to take Kapanen+Gardiner+Toronto's 2017 2nd for Trouba.

I do agree with the above that it most likely takes Gardiner to interest Winnipeg, although I think you'd only have to add a quality prospect, OR the draft choice! Gardiner's 2016/17 advanced stats, suggest a great time to investigate what he could bring in!

one good year in advanced stats for Gardiner don't match the career advanced stats for Trouba (especially when you factor in that 2 of those years were spent beside Mark Stuart).

Have to agree though that any trade for Trouba is going to have Gardiner + and that's not a knock on Gardiner because he's been great this year!

Leafs could get Trouba without offering Gardiner but it will take a first rounder and another good forward prospect. Moving Gardiner for Trouba doesn't improve the defense enough. It is a lateral move.

Closest one I've seen yet, though I'm not super high on Kapanen.

The thing about moving Gardiner is that you essentially take one step forward, and another step back. You strengthen the right side, but weaken the left. Are you convinced that Dermott or one of the young guys is ready to step up and take on a top 4 roll? Or does that just create another hole?

What about keeping it Dermott and Kapanen but including a first rounder?

I'll let you in a little secret.....there is absolutely zero chance the Jets move Trouba for a 1st and any collection of prospects you put together. Jets are in a very very similar situation to the Leafs, lots of high end offensive talent and D core that needs another piece or two. Would the Leafs trade Reilley/Gardiner for the Jets 2017 1st round pick and prospect? Of course not,....thats the exact same deal you proposed.

I agree, I would trade Gardiner, Dermott and a 2nd for Trouba. This helps both Teams. The Jets get the LD they need and another that should be able to replace Enstrom when his contract expires and the Leafs get the RD they need and then have the capital to sign one of the good LD in free agency (I'd pursue Alzner). Although I will admit the Jets can just go do the same thing and not lose a good RD in the process. But the Trade does make both Teams better.

Gardiner's play is defensively is superior to Rielly's play. Gardiner is better at suppressing shots than Rielly is and is putting up similar levels of points 5v5. If you want to sell a left handed D man to get a right handed d-man for a lateral move all the stats point towards moving Rielly as the better move for the leafs if you propose moving one of the Leafs top 2 current dmen.

If you really want Trouba then trying to make the best pairing possible is the way to go and that speaks to a Gardiner/Trouba top d pairing being superior to a Rielly/Trouba pairing. Given that the Leafs main problem at this point is shot suppression, defensive zone coverage and breaking the puck out, Gardiner is the better player. All the things Rielly is good at would be replaced by Trouba who is also far superior to Rielly at shot suppression.
