Description
Oilers cap situation is so effed.

Absolutely terrible mismanagement by Holland and it’s going to take a miracle to come back as a contender next season

Holland convinces Keith to retire, offers him a front office eRole with a fat salary where he does no actual work like the rest of the Oilers Old Boys Club

    Additional Details:
No idea what it costs to dump kassian but I’m sure Arizona would mind this. Only owed 5.43 in salary after retention but will have $3 million cap hit each year. Plus a 2nd and a cheap young roster player in benson for their troubles.

Might be a bit light to be honest but kinda has to happen

I think it costs more than a 2nd to dump Kassian. Benson is not even a fringe NHL player.

I'd be worried about Evander Kane having a 5 year contract. Will he return to his Evander ways? He's sure having a great playoffs though.

do 2 yr no more and if he is a solid teammate the 2 years give him another 2 yr.

Smart. But Kenny loves long term deals. Well in Detroit he did. He once gave Justin Abdelkader a 7 year contract extension! He's still on the Red Wings books for 4 more years after Yzerman bought him out. ☹️

Way I see it, it cost a 2nd rounder last season to dump Stralman, two 2nds to dump Ladd. Imo Kassian is the same on ice value as these two but has a smaller contract. So, for 2 years at $3 million (after retention) for 2 years, it should cost more than one 2nd round pick but less than two 2nd round picks. I felt benson was a reasonable addition but I could see some other C tier prospect being included instead

Imo 5 years brings down AAV. A one or two year deal could hit 6+ per year. GM’s are attracted to shiny things (aka goal scorers with an unsustainable shooting %)

They should just let Kane walk but we know that will never happen lol

Kane the hockey player deserves that contract extension. But we've seen what happens when he has money. Hopefully he'll cut out all the off ice shenanigans. And Kenny will definitely offer that contract. 🤣

Because the Kassian contract isn’t that horrendous? Benson has promise. I would prefer a 2nd 2022, but it’s fine, I could probably trade for a pick this year. Kassian is a good dressing room guy, stands up for my players and is looks good in the bottom 6 and, if there are any injuries, I could slide him in top 6 one night or another because he has experience there. I also have cap room, so 3M for 2 years isn’t bad.

is it unsustainable though? Kane has never had the skilled C he has with McDavid! and with teams focused on him Kane gets more freedom to do what he does best and that’s score goals! i think 40+ goals next year would be my expectation with him. only concern is his attitude and off ice issues. still after 3 strikes i don’t think any team gives him more than 2 years.

Hard to say, only a few teams out there these days can afford to take cap dumps (AZ, Chicago maybe, Buffalo, Ottawa) I would hope his battles with substance abuse are in the past.

I heard some rumors around the time of the TDL that dj smith apparently likes the way kassian plays.
