i dont think calgary can keep both johnny and tkachuk. i assume they resign johnny and take the picks for tkachuk

my trade is prob not enough for timo ,but #2oa holtz smith plus whatever sj wants

campbell to form a formidable tandem with daws, hopefully daws becomes a star.

2023-24 salary situation and beyond
2.4 mil current cap space
assume you move 1 of graves/ severson so say 3 mil more avail
Schneider 2 mil comes off
move blackwood maybe ? 2.8 mil free
let janne and bastian walk 2.6 free (haven't impressed me)

12.8 mil now available

raises on top of current salary around~9mil

siegenthaler +2.5 mil (arguably best defender 0f 2022)
bahl +.5 mil (big body )
graves/severson +2 mil (like to keep both unlikely)
mccleod +1.5mil (faceoff king/ solid 3-4 center)
yegor +2.5mil (hoping he take that next jump to 60plus points)

3.8 mil left in cap space

filling in roster for the future . foote/ stillman/ boqvist/ zetterlund/ tyce for the 2 foward spots (bastian, janne)

luke / okhotiuk for the severson/graves spot

not a huge fan of moving all the 1st picks would rather just pay Johnny but tkachuk will be available...i think it may be necessary to be a serious contender for a cup for the next few years

The tkachuk signing is a big no from me. I like him, bu the only player worth four 1st round picks is McDavid.

No way should Jersey give up their four first rounders. They would better to overpay Gaudreau or other UFAs and keep their picks.

I agree they can't sign both. Actually I'm of the opinion, Gaudreau is going to leave either Jersey or Philly. There even might be another team or two in the East that could sign him.
And I'm of the opinion that Tkachuk is going seek being a UFA in summer of 2023. Not worth even trying to sign him or trade for him.

No this doesn't work in the long term.
Assuming Hughes, Holtz, and the 2022 1st rd draft pick become top of the lineup players (+6m aav), Devils will have to resort to major cap casualties at around 2026-2027 when all those ELCs are coming off.
Even replacing Holtz with Meier doesn't solve that issue in the long term.

Devils can go big with taking on external cap if it's expired by end of 25-26, this is why I would have no qualms doing shorter term (2-3 years) higher aav (+7m) contracts for guys like Kadri or Kuemper.
However I think the best course of action is to look at FAs one tier below Kadri or Kuemper with guys you can keep around for a little bit longer: Nichushkin, Copp, Burakovsky, Palat, Marchment.

Damn you think very much like me! don’t overpay and screw yourself in FA! depend on your scouts and drafting and piece a few mid level FA to fill the voids.
that being said as a sharks fan this is the first Meier trade i’ve liked and we should accept.

why are so many people so down on Meier? dude scored 35 goals and was over a PPG and his +/- was -3 on a team that Literally only had 1 decent line, his. and the sharks scored 50 less goals than it gave up!
On a decent team with 2 quality lines he could easily be a 40 goal 90-100 point player. and he is only 25
