Why would CAR do this? How do two late first rounders help them when they're in the prime of their contender window with nobody to replace somebody like Pesce?

What would CAR want for Pesce, assuming that they are willing to listen to offers.

That junk pile won’t get Pesce. 16OA, 28OA, and Mittelstadt is of no help to the Canes now, but also subtracts more than actually adds. Canes have no need for any more Centers. Canes are contenders, not retooling or rebuilding. Canes won’t consider the thought of trading Pesce until Heimosalmi is comfortable at the NHL.

I can't see why they would be though? If they traded him, they'd need to replace him, which, to get a player even close to his caliber would be far more expensive. They were 1 game from the conference finals playing their 3rd string goalie-they'll be fine.

From BUF? Dhalin, Power. I already know the answer though which is why there's no deal that works between the teams that involves Pesce.

Guys this is your 2nd pairing defense and you're getting 3 1st rd picks lol.
I get that it leaves a hole in your D and is tough to replace and that's fine and understandable.
But per Pesce's value this is more than fair and far from a pile of junk lol

I don't think they would. Was just curious. I know it'll cost an arm and a leg, just wondering which arm and leg they'd be looking at.

Idk - Matthews? Again, I know what the answer is there, but for the guys you'd be willing to trade (Nylander) I don't think the Canes would do it for even if value isn't far off b/c Pesce is harder to replace than a guy like Nylander with so many options in FA.

Pesce is fhe definition of a player (and there are at least one on every team) worth much more to the incumbent team that the trading team. Always going to lead to disagreements in value.

Someone to fill the hole that Pesce would leave, a top 6 pure goal scoring winger, a top prospect, and high draft capital. Anything less gets immediately shot down.

That might seem like an overpayment to some, but at the contract he is on, and for what he provides on and off the ice, the teams that would want to acquire Pesce would essentially be asking the Canes not to make a run at the Cup that year. And that would require a big overpay, not just to pry him out, but to make the Canes not take a shot at the cup.

I Agree it's not a pile of junk but two late first rounders and Middle don't do much for a team right in their contention window. Pesce is hard to replace and those pieces don't do anything for the short term which is what Canes fans and the team are more concerned w/ right now. When there's no incentive to trade a player away the price is always going to be astronomical.

Why would someone trade someone who can fill Pesce's role, plus a top 6 scoring winger, and high draft capital.

Let's take a look in the mirror bud. That is preposterous.

Pesce should, and would be on the top pairing if it was anyone else other than Rod coaching the team. The only reason Rod plays him on the second pairing is because he doesn’t want all his eggs in one basket. Pesce is a legitimate top pairing defenseman, so 2 late firsts and a roster player who holds no value to the Canes would be a terrible move for the Canes. So the pile of junk you offered would be immediately shot down.

Yeah, I'd assume it'd be both arms and a leg. *IF* he ever became available, there'd be about 30 teams bidding on him.

I never said anything about filling the hole completely. At the very least, a stopgap would have to be included to partially fill the hole, since the likelihood of the hole being filled completely is very low.

It's quantity over quality. The only reason contending teams trade away any of their top tier of players is because of cap issues. Pesce, at his current contract, has incredible value. Carolina would be digging a massive hole, and wouldn't be getting any dirt to throw in the hole. You're likely looking at 2-3 years at minimum for either of those picks to even sniff the NHL, at which point Carolina's window could potentially be a heck of a lot shorter than it currently is.

If I'm Carolina, I'm adding to my team, not subtracting.

Extremely rare Ron Francis voodoo magic. Think he sold his soul for Teuvo, Pesce, Aho and Slavin...

Slavin and Pesce were both signed to long term contracts before they were names that anyone in the league were talking about.

Yeah, very lucky on that one. Canes FO took a risk (low-risk, high-reward based on what they saw already) and locked both Pesce & Slavin up at a MUCH lower rate than they would've needed to just 1 year later. I think that's where a lot of teams are trending now though - lock up guys a year or two earlier when you're fairly confident you know what you have. Chances are it'll be a great deal for the team barring a huge injury.

Only ONE of the 1sts is “late”
The VGK pick is mid-1st, 16th overall
