Cap Hell

Created by: mr_noodles

Description
Trying to get the Oilers through cap hell whilst upgrading the goaltending and replacing Evander Kane is a bit of a nightmare but I think this team is pretty decent for the limited options I had. Let me know in the comments if this team can make another deep playoff run or if you think anything I did was stupid. I did my best to balance the trades and make the contract signings as realistic as I could but that's always hard to do. Any feedback is appreciated.

I agree. It’s crazy that he has 2 game 3 hat tricks.

Ottawa doesn’t need Tyson Barrie, he’s just another Michael Del Zotto, more points but worse defensively

The big rumor was that Varlamov has already let it known he will not waive for Edmonton, so it's a moot point; but speaking to the value, the Islanders would need more coming back to take Smith off your hands. I can live with him as the backup next year but I'd argue Samorukov and a 2nd isn't enough for Varlamov (just take out the 5th/7th swap it's not adding any value), so Edmonton has to up the ante a little bit more.

I'd love for that to happen but Kane is gonna cash in and we can't afford him. Marchment is like a poor man's Kane and I think he'd be a great fit.

Figured they might want someone to pair with Chabot but agree Barrie might not be the best fit. They are desperate to end the rebuild so I wondered if they might be buying on defence.

I wouldn't say Smith has negative value. He would be a fairly cheap one year veteran backup for Sorokin. As for Varly, I figured with the season he just had, combined with Sorokin's emergence, he might be had for a little cheaper. What would you like to see in return to make it more fair?

I guess to me the biggest issue is Samorukov's low ceiling - he doesn't profile as much more than a bottom pair/7th D type of guy. I feel like I'd want something a little more sure, even it's just a middle 6/middle pair kind of ceiling - Savoie might be a bit of a reach but I think I'd take a swing with Lavoie or Matvey Petrov. Isles need depth help across their organization, but wingers in general have been a sore spot for this franchise going back for a few years now, and getting a strong scoring winger would be an ideal return for Varly.

Ottawa is reported to be looking for a top4 defenceman, but I think that’s a little vague. What they are looking for is a top3 defenceman with a high defensive awareness that could possibly pair with Chabot.

The problem is, they have nine NHL defencemen.

Chabot, Zaitsev, Hamonic, Zub, Del Zotto, Holden, Sanderson, Brannstrom, and Mete, not to mention rookies Thomson and Bernard-Docker. They already said they weren’t giving Mete a QO, so that leaves eight, so if they acquire another defenceman, two have to go, and the rookies stay in the AHL.

They’re trying to consolidate assets, but so are all the other teams coming out of rebuild, namely Detroit, New Jersey, and Los Angeles.

Connor Murphy is a guy I wanted, but now he has concussion issues, so better to wait a year on him to see a full recovery.

Anyway, just some info, no need to respond.
