Description
This roster is keeping in mind what the Caps' Athletic beat writer Tarik El-Bashir said in his most recent Q and A.

The big one is that he said MacLellan is the most honest GM in the league. If he says something is an issue or he will do something, he almost always does.
This means that:
1. McMichael will play 2 or 3c full time next year, and at least one of Backstrom, Eller, or Dowd will have to go to make room for him
2. The goaltending will be upgraded, and one of Samsonov or Vanacek will not be back next year
3. They will try to get younger, but mostly through external younger players in 23-27 range, not internal promotions from Hershey
4. There will be at least one big free agent signing or trade

I am going to assume Backstrom is out for the entire year at least, as its looking more and more likely he could be LTIRetired.

For the FA signings:
Kulak has looked incredible in Edmonton, by far their best defenseman over the playoffs, but still wouldn't completely break the bank.
Nichuskin is a top 6 forward who is insane defensively and can more than hold his own offensively when playing with elite offensive talent. The perfect fit for the top line with Ovi and Kuzy.

  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Winnipeg needs to do something, and it sounds like PLD wants out. They get back two future firsts and the caps 2020 first pick in Lapierre. Despite what people on this site think, Eller is not a cap dump and still a very good 3c on an expiring contract, probably around a 3rd in value.

This is significantly more than what Winnipeg would get back in an offer sheet, and more than a fair price for PLD. I know that every Winnipeg fan would rather move Schiefle, but there's a reason that's the case, and I would not want the caps to move for him.

  1. Eller, Lars
  2. Lapierre, Hendrix
  3. 2022 1st round pick (WSH)
  4. 2023 1st round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Here is the big trade and getting younger in one.
2.
WSH
  1. Talbot, Cam
Additional Details:
Seems like MN will try to bring Fleury back, and Talbot is unhappy with being sat for the playoffs. MN also desperately needs to shed cap.

Vanacek will be a cheap backup goalie for around 1.5 million. Leason is a former second round pick that is a cheap bottom 6 NHL player. Got into around 30 games this year and played pretty well in them, could also be completely buried in the minors.
MIN
  1. Leason, Brett
  2. Vanecek, Vitek [RFA Rights]
  3. 2022 3rd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
The caps get their veteran starting goalie without overpaying for Kuemper in FA.

MN would take the 3rd round pick and maybe a 4th rounder instead of the players. We’ve got quite a few prospects coming up already to fill any bottom 6 needs but need to restock Iowa.

Love the moves, even though its unrealistic, I think PLD is my number one want. Followed by FF and Nichushkin. Kulak would be an awesome get as well.

Great reasoning on all moves. As a fan of both the Jets and Caps, I think this trade favors the Caps. Dubios is a very good, young player and I don't think he'd get moved for 1st round picks which will hopefully be the 32nd picks in the next few drafts lol (wishful thinking as a Caps fan) and Lapierre who is a very good young player in his own right, but very unproven.

My opinion could change if Dubios is not looking to sign here long term obviously. The hope around Winnipeg at least in my view is Schiefele gets moved, build the offence around Dubios, Connor & Ehlers. If Dubios wants out, Chevy has proved that he's not afraid to move on given the right price (Trouba, Laine...)

Overall, I like a lot of the moves you made as a Capitals fan, I'm just not sure the Jets accept unless Dubios won't sign. I would also like to save a bit more cap space so we don't have issues when Willy comes back.

I have Willy on LTI here, so his cap hit is factored into the roster already.

Definitely understand on the Winnipeg side and would definitely be willing to add a bit, but I just don't see what better package they could get for him. They want to move Scheifle for all the reasons I think the Caps should stay as far away as possible: not good in the locker room, a lot of empty calorie secondary assists and empty net goals, and somehow worse defense than Ovi and Kuzy. Maybe there isn't a trade that makes sense for both teams for PLD but I just don't see how the Jets can continue in this holding pattern of having a top 5 goalie in the league and still being extremely mediocre, and three first rounders no matter how late (plus around 5 million in cap space) isn't something that can be dismissed out of hand.

I think those are overpays but they would get the job done.

And I like Kulak but Caps have to give time to Alexeyev and Johansen.

Yea for FA I always try to overpay. I think Alexeyev and Johansen will end up being NHL players but neither have blown the doors of in the AHL enough to where the caps absolutely need to get them in and not sign a good 2ld in their place.

Jets decline. I think you’d have a better chance trading for hellebuyck than PLD. There’s zero indication he wants out. Players are just being patient to see how the coaching situation plays out in Winnipeg. Which makes total sense.

I hear that Ovi wants out. The caps should trade him for nothing too

AA is more than ready. Dude is done with the AHL. He looks the way Siegenthaler looked his last year in the AHL. They are just done with being in the league and are too good for it.
