Rebuild

Team: 2022-23 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 29, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
CGY: Signals we're officially starting the rebuild, Toews is competitive and wants to win, the window for CGY is open right now and Toews gets another chance at winning the cup. Toews still has the skill set to be a valuable member of a cup contender and is a solid upgrade over Monahan and probably Backlund, able to slot in as 2C/3C immediately. Stillman for cheap grit and good bottom pairing D that fits CGY's style of play more than CHI's. Beck is a 6th round pick that has promising results, not like we're asking for Coronato/Zary/Pelltier/Kerins/Nikolayev. We get a first since we're retaining 5.25 mil, and taking on Monahans full contract and Monahan might be worse for ware next year after his surgery.

TOR: Mrazek is bad and we dont have any goalies signed that can take the starting position, if we can make a team pay to take their goalie, its a win and considering the cap problems TOR will be in after this season especially when it comes to resigning Campbell, Mrazek has to go and TOR will have to pay to do that. TOR fans wont like it but has to be done. For Toronto fans that still dont get it, Mrazaek is old, has poor play the last couple seasons, is injury prone, is overpaid, and still has 2 years on his contract. He isnt good, you will have to pay to get rid of him. Holl on the other hand is servicable as a bottom pair PKer. I know the motto for the Leafs is "Run it back" but you cant do that without losing some assets/picks to clear cap, and shedding almost 6 mil will cost you.

BUF: The mega blockbuster thats sends the hometown boy back to BUF and sends a 1/3 of a great dcore to Buffalo in Murphy/Mccabe who immeditely bolsters BUF's blue line. Potential pairings are Dahlin-Murphy, Powers-Joki, Mccabe-???. Kane comes with extension so thats why theres an extra first, not to mention we dont take any of the major prospects from each position (Ukka, Powers, Quinn). Mccabe has at least 3 years, Murhpy has at least 4, and P.Kane comes with multi-year extension with at least 2 years (but probably longer since hes still playing at over a ppg pace). BUF seems to be trending in the right direction and adding these pieces makes them even more competitive now and could possibly bring them into the playoffs. BUF sends us Bjork to balance out contract #, if BUF doesnt want to trade Bjork then someone else making around mil for 1 more year. BUF keeps 2 first round picks this year, and their pick next year is top 5 protected as insurance if things go south for unexpected reasons.

CAR: Taking on a cap dump and trading prospects. Gardiner will need to be shipped out since I assume Deangelo will be resigned by CAR. Third for a cap dump with 1 year. Bokk/Beaduin are similar age, both late first round picks from 2018 that might need a change of scenery, also clears up the clog of LHD prospects for the hawks.

OTT: Same thinking as the TOR trade, trading cap dump for cap dump, with the difference being one has more term and cost. The difference is a couple picks. I think Connolly still has what it takes to play in the NHL, and if not who cares since Murray was down in the AHL like Connolly. OTT saves money and it comes off the books a year quicker.

Our AHL Team would have Bokk-Reichel-Peterka as its first line. We let the kids cook down in Rockford for another year or two and we tank hard for Bedard and cross our fingers. No point in rushing anyone let alone Reichel. Would have been nice to have Boqvist, Sillinger, and the 7th overall pick this year for the rebuild but Bowmans gonna Bowman. Khaira is on ltir since I dont think somebody can come back from a hit like that after having other concussion issues throughout their career which is unfortunate because I thought he was playing well. They say that teams dont tank but front offices do, with this team I have no doubt we will be terrible.

Buffalo says No Thanks. If he wants to come home I will just sign him next year.

Ottawa doesn't need to do anything with Murray. Less alone pay that huge price cause they can pretty easily just wait the remaining two years out and have him on LTIR.

Also how does a team that has an excess in cap space have to pay to get ride of cap. That contract is not causing a determent to Ottawa and he'll most likely sit on LTIR anyway.

For those reasons Ottawa declines.

You can have the 2nd or Holl but not both. There’s a lot of teams in the same position as Blackhawks that need a goalie.

They dont have a cap issue now but I figured with Stutzle/Pinto having to get paid next year and I think OTT will be active in FA having some extra money will come in handy. Thanks for the feedback.

Gardiner holds neither positive nor negative value. Carolina can get future considerations for Gardiner. He does hold value to teams that need to hit the cap floor. Canes pass.

As a Blackhawks fan, I would love it if we could pull off these trades, but it's simply not going to happen. Most of these would be steals for the Hawks.
Yes, Ottawa will likely need to pay to get a team to take Murray, but 2 second-rounders is steep, a team would probably take him for one of those. Especially if you do a cap dump swap. As you pointed out, if Ottawa really wants to get rid of that cap hit, they can just bury Murray.

Yeah, the Leafs will have to pay to move Mrázek, but again, we aren't the only team that can weaponize cap space. A second to take on Mrazek would be a really good deal for him, I feel a third is more likely. Two picks and a prospect is insane, especially for a GM angry with Davidson for the way the Hagle trade leaks at the TD. Katchouk is a 3/4th line grinder and doesn't add enough to this trade to warrant that return for eating Mrazek's contract.

I'm a huge Toews fan, but the reality is he isn't a second-line center anymore. He's aging, injury-prone, and doesn't put up the numbers he used to. Even at 5million, asking for a first+ for him seems a bit steep. Maybe I could be wrong, but I don't see a team doing that, especially a team that is gonna have to resign some big-name guys in the offseason (if they can). For that return, it will likely mean taking on more salary to help out with cap issues, such as Lucic.

I doubt very much Kane would waive for Buffalo. I suspect if he waives, it's because he wants to be on a competitive team, and that isn't Buffalo. They were only 4 wins better than the Hawks this year, not to mention his girlfriend and son live in Chicago. That being said, if he were to waive for Buffalo, this is likely the most realistic trade I see here value for value-wise, but I'm not sure the full defensive player movements would fit with what Buffalo needs/wants to do right now. I would suspect a trade for Kane would likely be just Kane for two firsts and a prospect.

I don't have much against that Carolina trade,

There is no value in teams that need to hit cap floor. Why would teams do another team a favor for free.
Teams will take on cap for picks, or they will just sign people for money.

No from Sabres. If he wants to play for Sabres, he`ll come around trade deadline or next offseason. Sabres are not Patrick Kane away from seriously contending, so no need to get him now.

Welcome, I just think that Ottawa waits out that contract or that he isn't medically cleared to play again or retires. Just because of his concussion injuries.

It also helps having him and Zaitsev expiring in the same year.
